Monthly Archives: June 2007Natrural Beauty Tips: Using olive oil as a cleanserOK, ok, I know what you’re thinking: olive oil is, well, oily, isn’t it? And smelly. And, most importantly: something you put on your food, not on your face.
Summer Beauty Buys: Two Faced Quickie Chronicles’ The Beach Bunny palette
As much as I hate seeing women lying on the beach and touching up their makeup, there’s no denying that summer calls for a slightly different approach to cosmetics. You’re going to want to pare it down a little, and maybe go for something a little more dewy and natural than you’d wear during winter. The Beach Bunny by Too Faced is the ideal palette for summer, with two lip glosses, two eye shadows and a blusher. It’s reduced to £7.70 at PrettyCow.co.uk , and it comes in a pretty little box, too. You know how we love the packaging. Celebrities Without Makeup: Christina Ricci
Ouch. Definitely one of the scariest “Celebrities sans makeup” shots I’ve seen, I think…. Here we have Christina Ricci with dissapearing eyebrows, a nice set of under-eye luggage, pasty skin, and generally looking like… well, like one of us, really. Welcome to the club, Christina.

Benefit launch D’finer D’liner – invisible anti-feathering lip liner
This is an “invisible” lip liner which they say will melt into those fine lines around the lips (wonder if it’d melt into the fine lines everywhere else, too?) and stop your lipstick bleeding into them. It’s $18, and I haven’t tried it yet, but being the Benefit whore that I am, I probably will soon, so stay tuned for a review. Get it at Benefit Beauty Mistakes to Avoid: Cutting your own hairAs you go through life, you start to realise that there are some things only stupid people do. Pouring bleach in their coffee. Almost choking to death on their own dinner. Wearing crocs. To this short list, however, I would add one more item: trying to cut their own hair. Now, I know not to cut my own hair, and specifically, not to cut my own fringe (or "bangs" if you’re in America). The reason I know this? Because I have done it before. Many, many times, in fact. And it has never, ever, worked out well. My hairdresser has told me not to do it. My friends have told me not to do it. I have told myself not to do it. So, what do you think I did today, folks? I cut my own hair.

Beauty Product Review: Microplane Foot File
This is probably way too much information for most of you, but my feet? Suck. Well, I mean, they don’t literally suck – they’re feet, after all. But years of dedicated stiletto wear have left them looking rather the worse for wear. I have skin so hard on the soles of my feet that I could probably walk across hot coals and not feel a thing. Seriously. Over the years I’ve tried just about every type of foot file and foot cream imaginable. Nothing has worked. But with my wedding coming up a few months ago, and a pair of beautiful new shoes to wear to it, I was ready to try anything – which is why the relatively expensive Microplane Look after the jump to see how I got on…

Celebrities Without Makeup: Alicia Silverstone
It’s cruel, we know, but it’s also kinda comforting to see celeebrities without makeup and realise that, actually? They’re not all that. Take Alicia Silverstone, here, for example. Beautiful girl, very pretty face – but without makeup? Or access to a comb? Oooh! Makeover!

Kerastase to make skincareI have to admit that haircare is one of the few beauty-related items I refuse to spend a lot of money on. On my hair, one shampoo is pretty much like another – with one exception. Called Kéraskin Esthetics, the new line will launch in December, but will only be available in the US and Canada – damn! There will apparently be a total of 34 different skin care products available as part of the range: can’t wait to try it out (if, of course, I can get my sticky little hands on it…) Hard Candy’s ‘Mix Tape’ makeup palette
I should probably be embarrassed to admit this, but I’m a complete sucker for packaging. Show me a piece of makeup in a funky box, and I’ll probably be reaching for my credit card and getting ready to buy it. The latest thing on my beauty wish list? Hard Candy’s Mix Tap palette. No, I haven’t tried it, but yes, I probably will – and it’s not because of the combination of three eye shadows and three lip glosses which it contains. No, it’s because it looks like an old cassette tape. Just call me "shallow". Being from a generation that actually used to make mix tapes on a regular basis, though, this is a nice blast from the past for me. Choose from the Breakup Mix, the Workout Mix and the Party Mix – $15 each.

Wish List Sunscreen: Coppertone Sunscreen Clear Continuous Spray
During the summer, then, I never go out without at least SPF 30 slathered all over my body. The problem with this? Well, most high factor sunscreens tend to be thick, gloopy and white. You have to wait an hour for them to absorb before you can even think about getting dressed, and most of them are so white they just make me look even paler than I was when I started. (Which is a pretty tall order, let me tell you). Even when I do wait for the sunscreen to absorb, I invariably end up with streaks of the stuff all over my nice white t-shirts and other clothes – and just in case you were wondering, that stuff ain’t never coming out. | |||||||||||
