Monthly Archives: July 2007Strange Beauty Aids # 1 – The Beauty Smile Trainer. Ouch.
"Smile! It might never happen!" You ever get people saying that to you? I do. All the time, in fact. And it’s not that I’m a totally miserable person all the time (just sometimes), it’s just that, like most people, I don’t tend to walk around with a huge grin plastered to my face for no reason. I can now, though. The Beauty Smile Trainer is a Japanese innovation that promises to enhance your smile, making it wider and more alluring than ever before. It also claims to reduce wrinkles and improve muscle tone, although how it does that, I don’t know. What I DO know, is that no matter how many people tell me to "smile, it might never happen", I still don’t think anything would induce me to stick this in my mouth. The packaging is hilarious, though – look at the little girl’s "before" face. Hee! [via Shiny Shiny]

Beauty Wish List: Einstein Lip Therapy Lip Balm
It would be wonderful if the real Einstein had made beauty and skincare products, wouldn’t it? I bet if he had devoted more time to anti-wrinkle cream, and a little less time to the theory of relativity, the world would be a much better place. Or a more youthful looking place, anyway. I jest, of course. And who needs old Albert when we have Einstein Cosmetics, with their lip therapy lip balm? This claims to give ” refreshing burst of cool heat” to chapped lips, and that sounds pretty good to me. I have such a problem with lip balms, though: because I spend so much of the day drinking coffee or water, they never seem to stay on my lips for long enough to do the job. Maybe this one will be different? Penelope Cruz for L’Oreal’s Telescopic mascara – do these lashes look real to you?
OK, if L’Oreal’s Telescopic mascara can give me lashes like these, count me in. Where do I buy them? How many tubes can I buy? Can I buy all the tubes, because, seriously, those lashes are so long they actually look false, don’t they? Oh no, wait… that’s because they are false, isn’t it? Following a viewer complaint, L’Oreal have now admitted that Penelope is wearing individual false eyelashes in her advert for Telescopic. Tut, tut, L’Oreal! Unsurprisingly, the Advertising Full story: The Daily Mail

Sunblock on a Rope! Mini Ultra Lite Oil-Free Sunblock by Peter Thomas Roth
Sunblock, though – sunblock is a completely different matter. If you’re planning on leaving your house at all during the summer months (and, actually, during the rest of the year too, if you care about your skin), you’re going to want to have your sunblock with you. What better way to make sure it’s always handy than by sticking it on the end of a rope? Genius.

Dollface Reviews: Benefit Speedbrow tinted eyelash gel
Given that this site has become my own special place for embarrassing myself , I may as well admit that, as well as meeting above my nose (if I don’t tweeze them every day), my eyebrows are also long and straggly. Yes, you wish you were me, you really do… When you have long, straggly eyebrows, you face a daily battle to look anything like “groomed”. You see, I can tweeze my eyebrows into the perfect shape, but the long, long hairs will still straggle, making me look like I’ve been dragged through the proverbial bush backwards. Cutting them is a mistake – that just makes them spiky. Having them professionally threaded or some other kind of salon treatment could work, but doesn’t because I am: a) poor So it’s Benefit Speedbrow all the way. Luckily for me, Speedbrow is something of a miracle worker on my eyebrows. As well as giving them a bit of colour (they’re naturally very pale), it also holds them in place, keeping all those stragglers in place and, even better, keeping them in place all day. It’s probably not as good as a professional eyebrow tweezing/threading/whatever, but almost… Buy It: Benefit Speedbrow

Ideal Beauty Charmeuse Pillow Cases – silk pillows that prevent wrinkles
Ever wake up in the morning with huge creases all over your face? Or is that just me? I also have a nose-to-mouth line on just one side of my face, which I’m sure is caused by the fact that I tend to fall asleep on that side. (OK, so my age probably has something to do with it too, but let’s just keep telling ourselves it’s the pillow, OK?) So basically, for me, pillows = wrinkles. Damn. Remind me why it’s called "beauty sleep" again? These silk pillow cases by Ideal Beauty claim to minimise those lovely morning creases by giving you a 100% silk pillow to lay your head on. They even give you a silk hairband to help control your hair while you sleep. Isn’t that nice?

Vintage look faux leather train case from Sephora
Sephora is, of course, famous for its train cases, and barely a day goes by without me cursing them for not having any stores here in Scotland. This case is particularly special, being made of faux leather, and looking like the kind of thing old Hollywood movie stars would carry around (or have someone else carry around for them, rather). It’s just $25, but I think I’d worry about getting that lovely lining all stained with makeup… But It: Sephora

Dollface Reviews: Revlon Skinlights Face Illuminator
I’m not normally much of a budget-beauty girl, but I discovered Revlon Skinlights Skinlights isn’t quite as dramatic as Highbeam, but is does give your skin a lovely, dewy look, and if you mix it with foundation it can be a nice “pick me up” for tired old skin (which is how mine is most of the time). Not bad for £9.95… Buy: Revlon Skinlights Beauty Wish List: Bare Escentuals Magic Wand brushless mascara
This is one of those products that sounds like it can’t possibly work, but being the mascara whore I am (oh yes I am) I just know I’m going to have to try it out at some point. It’s Bare Escentuals Magic Wand brushless mascara, and I’m intrigued by it because… well, because it doesn’t have a brush. Now, I’m a great believer in mascara brushes. In fact, I’d go so far as to say thta the mascara itself doesn’t really matter – it’s the brush that makes all the difference, and I’ve tested this out many a time by using my Lancome brush with a cheap, supermarket own-brand macara. (You can’t tell the difference, unless the mascara in question is my current ‘Holy Grail’, Lancome L’Extreme, in which case it’s gotta be that waterproof version). But I digress. This mascara doesn’t have a brush – instead, it has a "magic wand" – a bit like Harry Potter, only not really – which claims to coat every single lash, even the little ‘uns, creating a false eyelash effect. False eyelash effect? Sounds good to me. Anyone tried it?
