Dollface takes a vacation

dollface Dollface takes a vacationIf Sephora won’t come to Dollface, why then Dollface must go to Sephora! I’m off to the States for two weeks to shop up a storm, so if you’re wondering why there are less updates than usual, don’t worry, I’m just maxing out my credit card on all those US beauty products we just can’t buy over here.

I’ll be back in two week’s time to tell you all about my purchases. In the meantime, there’ll be sporadic updates at Forever Amber if you just can’t stand the suspense!

See you soon!

Bourjois Gloss Menthol lip gloss – gloss that freshens your breath

bourgoismentholgloss Bourjois Gloss Menthol lip gloss gloss that freshens your breathAs one of the better low-priced brands, I’m always interested to see what kind of new products Bourjois come up with – even when what they come up with is a little on the unusual side, like their new Gloss Menthol lipgloss.

If the advert on the left is to be believed this is one shiny gloss, to be sure. It’s also a breath freshener, though: yes, that glossy formula is "enriched with menthol" to "leave an ultra fresh breath sensation on your lips." I haven’t tried it, but I think I’m going to have to, purely for research purposes, you understand.

Anyone tried this one?

Hair Product Review: V05 Mud Miracle Intense Masque

vo5mudmiracle Hair Product Review: V05 Mud Miracle Intense MasqueWell, my conditioner-only washing experiment may not have been a success exactly, but I’m still on the hunt for something that will return my hair to its soft, shiny former glory, and this week I think I may just have found it.

I’ve only tried one application of VO5′s Mud Miracle Intense Masque, but already I’m impressed. Despite the name, this doesn’t actually look like mud (yes, I’ll admit I was expecting it to be a bit brown and gooey looking), but much the same as any other deep conditioner. It has a pleasant smell, too, which is always a bonus. The tub claims that you only need to leave it on for two or three minutes, but I left it on for slightly longer, shampooing my hair as normal, then working the Mud Masque through the length of my hair and letting it soak in.

The result? Well, my hair feels softer and in better condition than it has done for a while, and I’m still liking the smell, even a few hours on. Definitely something I’ll be using again, methinks.

Redheads! Recommend me a lipstick!

redlipstick Redheads! Recommend me a lipstick!Well, it had to happen sooner or later, didn’t it? My trusty old lipstick finally got continued, and when I say "old" I’m really not kidding here. You see, my lipstick of choice (it was a cheap Boots No. 7 lippy in  a shade called "Hickory") was actually discontinued quite some time ago, but luckily I had one tube in reserve which I’ve managed to eke out for a very long time now. (And yes, I do know you’re not supposed to use old cosmetics. But when they keep on discontinuing lines, what’s a girl to do?)

That one last tube of ‘Hickory’ is now on its last legs, though, which leaves me with something of a problem. I, as you know, am a redhead. I have very pale skin, very pale lips, and there are hardly any colours of lipstick that seem to suit me. I’ve used perhaps five brands of lipstick in my life – if I’m lucky – and now that my last one is about to die, I’ve been searching high and low for a replacement. Have I managed to find one, though? No. I have not. That’s where you come in.

Conditioner Only Washing Day 3 – Grease is the word!

conditioner Conditioner Only Washing Day 3 Grease is the word!Well, folks, the experiment is over. Today I made the switch to Boots coconut conditioner. Now, this is actually sold as an “intensive” conditioner, so it may just be that it was a little too intensive for my poor hair : all I know is that as soon as I finished bow-drying (for yes! I actually managed to find time to blow-dry my hair today!) my hair, I went straight back to the bathroom and washed it all out again. With shampoo, this time.

To be fair, I’ve seen my hair look greasier. And actually, it didn’t look all that greasy – but boy, did it feel it. When I ran my fingers through my hair, rather than falling back into place, the hair would just stay sticking up in the air. Yeah. This may not be the fault of the conditioner-only washing routine, of course. It could have been the type of conditioner I was using, or it could just be that I don’t have the right type of hair for this to work well, but for now at least, I’m going back to shampoo. I’m sure my friends will all thank me for it.

Conditioner Only Washing Day 2

conditionronlywashing Conditioner Only Washing Day 2Well, I have to admit I wasn’t quite as impressed with Day 2 of my conditioner only hair washing experiment as I was with Day 1. By the time I went to bed last night my hair had started to feel a little more greasy than it would have done ordinarily, so I was slightly worried that CO-washing just wouldn’t be enough for it today. I was pleasantly surprised, then, when the conditioner did manage to get the grease out: the problem I seem to be having at the moment is that my hair just doesn’t seem to feel as “fresh” as it would after washing with shampoo.

This could just be a psychological thing, of course: it’s not nearly as greasy as it would be if it hadn’t been washed at all, and I’m not sure anyone other than me would notice any difference. It does still feel thicker, softer and less flyaway, so I’m going to be continuing with the experiment to see how it goes. Of course, I didn’t blow dry again today (no time!) so perhaps that will make a difference to the way my hair looks after the CO-wash. Time will tell…

Conditioner Only Washing Day 1 – It works!

I have to confess I was really, really sceptical about this. You see, my hair needs to be washed every day. If I don’t wash it every day? Oil slick city. I was pretty sure that conditioner-only washing just wouldn’t be enough to get the grease out and make my hair feel clean, but guess what? It worked? My hair feels clean, it smells great, and it’s softer than it would be if I’d washed with shampoo. So far.

I used: Asda’s Citrus hair conditioner

Method: I rubbed the conditioner into my scalp, then applied to the the rest of the hair and left for around five minutes, while I was showering, before rinsing thoroughly and leaving it to air dry.

Result: So far, so good. There’s none of the stickiness or greasiness I was expecting, and my hair feels softer and less flyaway than usual. I haven’t tried blowdrying or styling it (hey, it’s Sunday), but so far I’m impressed.

Dollface Investigates: Conditioner-only hair washing (CO)

conditioneronlywashing Dollface Investigates: Conditioner only hair washing (CO)
For a while now, my hair’s been an absolute mess. The roots are greasy, the scalp is flaky, the ends are dry and brittle… and I really hope you weren’t eating while you were reading that. If so, sorry. (And no, that’s not me in the picture, needless to say).

None of the shampoos or conditioners I’ve tried have done much to restore my hair to its former (sort-of) glory, but, having read a bit about conditioner-only washing recently, I’ve decided to give it a try. This is something I’ve known about for a while but haven’t been quite brave enough to try, thinking it would probably just make my already-greasy roots even greasier. This week, though, I’m going to be giving it a go, and reporting back here to let you all know how I get on. Take a look after the jump to read a bit more about the experiment…

Dollface Reviews: Boots Refine & Rewind Intense Perfecting Serum

bootsrefinerewind Dollface Reviews: Boots Refine & Rewind Intense Perfecting SerumIt’s been over four weeks since I picked up my bottle of Boots’ Refine & Rewind Intense Perfecting Serum, so time for a quick review…

As I mentioned in my last post, this is actually the second time I’ve used Refine & Rewind, and I have to say the difference in my skin was less noticeable the second time round. When I first used the serum, back in April, there was a noticeable difference to pore size and skin softness – this time, although there was an improvement, it wasn’t quite as dramatic. That could just be because my skin had improved from the last round of Refine & Rewinding, or it could just be because I’ve been very stressed lately, which isn’t so great for skin, as we know. But that aside, on with the review:
