First things first: I’ve read a lot of commentary about Planet Skincare’s so-called "snake venom" moisturiser in which people seem to be assuming that it contains real snake venom, and that snakes must therefore have died in order to produce it.

Let’s be clear about this: it doesn’t.

This cream contains a synthetic version of the venom of the Temple Viper which mimics the actions of the venom to basically "stun" your face and prevent wrinkles. The key words here are "synthetic" and "mimics". It’s not real snake venom – although the fact that much of the media seems to have decided that it is has undoubtedly led to some great press for Planet Skincare.

No snakes were harmed in the making of this product, then, and there is no actual venom in it. This is good news for snakes, clearly, but there’s also good news for us, because this works in much the same way as Botox, only without the needles: your skin is effectively "stunned", meaning that expression lines can’t form, and wrinkles relax.

Apparently, Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan. And it sounds like Dollface would be one too, if it didn’t cost £60 per pot.

Yes, there’s the rub. This product doesn’t come cheap, but that clearly hasn’t stopped people buying it: Selfridges say it’s their best-selling beauty cream at the moment and are selling 50 pots per day. Would I try it?
