Monthly Archives: April 2009La Mer introduces The Treatment Powder Foundation SPF 15
Fans of La Mer's famous – and pricey – skin treatments, will no doubt love this: it's called The Treatment Powder Foundation, and it uses gemstones (they don't say which ones, unfortunately) to "smooth away imperfections" and "reveal a naturally flawless finish. La Mer’s potent skincare benefits leave skin looking luminous." The foundation promises to deliver medium to heavy coverage, and, as with most things La Mer, is fairly expensive, at $95. It's available from May at select Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and www.lamer.com FakeBake Travel Kit: Self tan on the go
When it comes to fake tan, I usually swear by the gradual tanning moisturisers I'm always writing about here. For my holiday this year, though, I've been considering investing in some Fake Bake, just for a change. (You can already tell how this is going to work out, can't you?) Once the tan is applied, though (and assuming all goes well), you then have the problem of how to maintain it while you're away. Our baggage allowance is only 20kg this year, and I'm planning to hit up Sephora while I'm away, so with space at a premium, this FakeBake travel kit sounds like a good idea. It contains 60ml versions of FakeBake's Self Tanning Cream, Passion Fruit Body Polish, Oil Free Moisturiser and SP3, and comes in a handy little gold mesh bag, so you can just pop it all into your suitcase. I'm tempted. Buy: FakeBake Travel Kit, £21,75

Giorgio Armani sparkling mascara topcoat
Now here's a novel idea - or it is to me, anyway, but then again, I really don't get out much. It's Giorgio Armani's sparkling mascara topcoat, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a "top coat" for your mascara that will add a little bit of sparkle to your lashes. Of course, this isn't mascara in itself, so you'll still need to use a regular mascara first, but when you're done, you simply brush this on over the top for the desired effect. I haven't seen this worn, but it sounds to be like it'll be more subtle than those coloured mascaras I'm always so dubious about, and could be a nice finishing touch for a night out.

Coloured mascara from Barry M
Coloured mascara is one of those beauty things I don't really "get". That's not to say I always go for the natural look with my lashes – err, quite the opposite, in fact – but somehow the thought of turning my lashes green, or red, or blue, or any colour other than plain black or brown just doesn't do it for me. If I DID want to try a colourful mascara, though, Barry M is where I'd get it. They've just launched their Brightly Coloured Lengthening Mascara in new shades of Bright Turquoise and Electric Purple, and it's also available in Emerald Green, Sky Blue, Shocking Pink, Bright Turquoise or Electric Purple. I'm going to be sticking to natural shades, if not natural lengths, but if you want to try these out, they're only £4.95 and you can buy them here. Benefit ‘A Misfit Like Me’ makeup bag
Aww! A makeup bag for us misfits! This is just a little 'un, but I like the "true confessions" style of the design, which is so very "Benefit". As they say themselves, it would be perfect for brushes and pencils but it would also be a handy to pop into your handbag, with those Handbag Heroes inside. It's $18 from Benefit.

Lancome Limited-Edition Beauty Essentials Set
Oh, those beauty brands! How well they know me! They know, for instance, that all they have to do is stick a few of their products in a cute little case and WHAM! I'll start drooling unattractively all over my keyboard. That, or make products that look like food, either one works for me. I'm a big Lancome fan, though, so I'd probably have been interested in this kit even if it didn't come packaged so prettily. It contains: • Definicils Pro Mascara in Black It's worth $229, but they're only charging you $95. Because they love you, obviously. Isn't that nice of them?

Smashbox Untamed Double-Ended Eye Brightner
"Briiiight eyeees, burning like…" Well, OK, maybe not burning like fire. In fact, that's the last thing you'd want, really, isn't it? My eyes sometimes DO burn like fire, and let me tell you, it's not a good look. This is why I like to keep a small – but powerful – stock of eye brightening products in my beauty box at all times. My all-time favourite is Benefit's High Brow, which is designed to highlight the brow bone, but which works everywhere else, too. But this double-ended eye brightener from Smashbox is looking pretty good to me too, right now. It's called "Untamed" (rarrr!) and it's a pale, shimmery gold on one end and pale, shimmery pink on the other, so you'll be able to use it to achieve both a natural "glow" and a more dressed-up look. Like High Brown, you can use this anywhere you want to highlight: brow bone, inner eye, bridge of the nose, and even the cupid's bow to give you a little bit more of a pout. It's $22 from www.sephora.com

Anastasia Brow Pen – Long Wearing Brow Tint
I'm currently addicted to Anastasia's brow products, which I think are some of the best around, but this is one I haven't got round to trying yet. It's a brow pen, which caught my attention because, while I've used lots of brow pencils and powders, I haven't come across one in a pen, yet, and I'm curious to see how different it would be to my usual products. Going by the description, there's nothing different about the application, anyway: this can be used either as a base for your regular brow makeup, or on it's own to fill in sparse areas. It's supposed to last all day, without smudging, and dries quickly. Worth $21, I wonder? If you think so, you can buy it from www.sephora.com Dollface Reviews: Ambre Solaire Spray SPF 30 sunscreen
I have the hardest time with sunscreen. Because I'm so pale, I have to be absolutely meticulous about applying it, and I also have to go for a high factor. The problem with that, though? Well, high factor sunscreens tend to be really thick, white and gloopy. They're hard to apply, take ages to soak into your skin, ruin your clothes (I always buy a selection of really cheap tanks and t-shirts to take on holiday with me because they always get ruined with sunscreen) and, in some cases, leave a white film on your skin which makes you look even paler than you started. This is why I love Ambre Solaire so much. Their spray sunscreen comes in SPF 30, and is CLEAR. It dries instantly, is super-quick to apply, and has yet to ruin any of my clothes. I've never been sunburned when I'm wearing it either, although, admittedly, I will generally wear an SPF 50 if I'm going to be in the sun for a while, and I always wear SPF on my face. The only drawback I can see to this is that it has a very distinctive smell: it's not unpleasant, though, and every time I smell it now I think of holidays and fun times, so it has some happy associations for me. It's £13.97 per bottle, and you can buy it at Boots.

No7 Protect & Perfect Skin & Body Collection
I've spoken of my love for the Boots Protect & Perfect Range many times here, and I almost feel like this skin and body set has been sent purely to test my powers of resistance. It's £48.98, which is actually pretty good value when you consider that inside the little vanity case, you'll find: · Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum, 30ml This would make a great gift, but it would also be a good introduction to the brand if you haven't got round to trying it yet. And if you have, well, you could just buy it anyway, no? | |||||||||||
