Last night saw the MET host the annual Costume Institute Gala, and The Fashion Police have details on all of the dresses. So far, though, the makeup looks that made the biggest impression on me were the dark, almost black lips on Rachel Weisz and Eva Herzigova, above.
Of course, black lipstick has been being touted as the look of the season for a while now, but because it's such a difficult look to pull off, it's still not something you see worn very often. Both Eva and Rachel choose to offset the gothic makeup with very light, almost ski-toned dresses, and mixed the black lippy with red and, in Rachel's case, plum, but I have to admit, I'm still not really loving this look. What about you?

Definitely NOT my favourite look… Don’t very dark lips always look a bit drag-queenish? No? It’s just me then…
Rachel looks great.
I think they both look exhumed.
Plus, Eva’s tooth to gum to totally odd coloured lip ratio irks me.
I’m usually a fan of dark lipstick, but this is really unflattering on both of them.

I’m a fan when it’s a trend that’s in, I’ll admit it. Back in 1996 when everyone was wearing goth black lipstick and pale skin, I was all about it. In 2009, it’s just not cool yet. And I’m with ayemiy, the tooth to gum to lip ratio is REALLY enhanced by the darrrrrk red lips. Creepy. Rachel, on the other hand, while not my favorite look for her by a mile…looks a little less unnatural. I think it’s the dark hair.
I agree with Gokarm above – Rachel just about pulls it off as the shade sits more comfortably with her colouring. Plus it is more of a matte approach. Eva rearing back to show us her gums doesn’t help a positive evaluation of her look either. Compounding matters, she pairs a very “now” lip with a very “then” hairstyle = Ye Gothic Farrah Fawcett.
I could start on the necklace nicked straight out of the Dr Frankenstein Laboratory of Wacky Wiring too, but shall stick to the makeup.
I’m new by the way: hello!

The Eva Herzigova picture doesn’t look right – it’s as if someone did a slight “pinch” effect centred on her nose.
I say maybe they should stop with the black/dark lip trend and head towards a more natural color again. Leave the goth & punk make ups alone.
It works on Rachel, but not on Eva. Rachel picked the right color for her skin tone, but Eva just looks like she’s been making out with a pomegranate. I like this look, but only if the person wearing it CAN PULL IT OFF.
Summary:
Rachel – YES!
Eva – Oh, hell no.
I’d suggest not for anyone over 35 as the look is very aging and for anyone under 35… well, the look is very aging.
very aging. somehow, doesn’t speak as goth to me, just as far too heavily made up
