Celebrities Without Makeup: Diane Kruger

Spl102513 001[1] Celebrities Without Makeup: Diane Kruger

Proving that it's NOT Maybelline, and she WAS born with it, here's Diane Kruger touching down at LAX after a long-ass flight from Cannes this weekend. After that amount of time in the air, I'm normally looking wild-eyed and bushy-haired (more so than usual, I mean), but Diane here still looks fresh as the proverbial daisy, even although she doesn't appear to be wearing a scrap of makeup. Lucky her…

Dollface Reviews: MeMeMe Fat Cat Lashes Mascara

Mememe fat cat lashes Dollface Reviews: MeMeMe Fat Cat Lashes Mascara

I'm still on the trail of the best budget mascara in the world ever. Will ANYTHING ever persuade me to give up my high-end mascaras? I doubt it, but today MeMeMe have given it their best shot with their Fat Cat Lashes mascara, which retails for £7.99 – a price that kick Lancome et al squarely in the pants.

It gets points straight out of the gate for the funky packaging and, of course, the name. It's called 'Fat Cat', and it has a nice fat brush, too. With this wand, you're supposed to be able to create a "false lash effect". I didn't find that to be quite the case, but it is one of the better budget brands: it's easy to use, goes on smoothly, and does add length to the lash – just not as much as some of the more expensive mascaras I've tried.

With that said, this is a great mascara for the money: it doesn't flake, doesn't run, and has a nice, thickening effect.

If you'd like to try it for yourself, it's available at Superdrug.

Dollface Reviews: Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick

Revlon colorstay lipstick Dollface Reviews: Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick

When Revlon said their new Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick would stay on for 12 hours, I have to admit I was skeptical.

I've been here before, you see. Every "long-lasting" lipstick I've ever tried has either:

a) Lasted until the first coffee of the day and then disappeared

b) Stayed on my lips for hours – literally HOURS – but turned fluorescent pink.

Nevertheless, I'm here to try these things out so you don't have to, and so it was that I bravely slapped on  the lipstick when it arrived this morning and then went off to have my shower. (Not that I would normally wear lipstick in the shower, you understand. It just so happened that this arrived right before I jumped in and, me being me, I couldn't wait to try the pretty new lipstick.)

In the shower, I washed my face as normal. I also shampooed my hair, and then conditioned it, so as you can imagine, my face got pretty wet. Oh, and before I got in, I brushed my teeth. So when I finally emerged, towel-turban in place, I wasn't expecting the lipstick to still be there.

But IT WAS.

Yes, the lipstick looked as good as new. I actually had to sit down to allow myself to digest this stunning information. It didn't look orange, either. No, it was still the same colour it went on, and it's still that colour now, two cups of coffee and a ham sandwich later. True, if I press my lips together, they feel just a little bit sticky, but it's nothing I can't handle, and I'm super-impressed that it's stayed on for so long AND remained true to colour. I drink a LOT of coffee throughout the day, so lipstick generally doesn't last long on me: this one would appear to be different, so although the colour I got is just a little too bright for me, I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the range.

If you'd like to try it out too, click here for more information.

Lancôme ‘Oscillation Powerbooster’ Vibrating Mascara Primer

Oscillation Powerb Lancôme Oscillation Powerbooster Vibrating Mascara Primer

I'm sure everyone's heard of Lancome's Oscillation Vibrating Mascara by now, but here's the companion piece you didn't know you needed -  'Oscillation Powerbooster' Vibrating Mascara Primer. Like the mascara, the wand vibrates, allegedly allowing you to reach  every lash. Unlike the mascara, this is white. Because it's a primer, not because there's some strange new trend for white eyelashes. (If there was, I could just stop dyeing mine and be "bang" on trend. God, how I hate that expression.)

This works in much the same way as any other primer: it preps the surface of your lashes, making it easier for mascara to cling onto them, and making smaller lashes more visible and less likely to be missed when you go in for the kill. The result should be lashes that look longer and thicker, and who doesn't want that?

I actually have the non-vibrating version of this, and I have to admit, I used it twice and then gave up on it because it just didn't work for me, mostly because of something I seem to bang on about all the time when I'm talking about mascara: the primer pulled the curl out of my lashes, so even if they WERE longer as a result of it, it was counterproductive, because they were straight, and therefore didn't have that dramatic, sticky-up look about them. (Yes, "sticky-up look" is a technical term.)

Reading about this has inspired me to to give it another try, though, so I'll do that and report back. If you'd like to proceed straight to the vibrating version, however, it's $39 (Wowee!) and it's available from Nordstrom.

Cowshed Baby Cow Floyd The Sponge

Floyd the cow Cowshed Baby Cow Floyd The Sponge

So, I like cows. No, I don't really know why, I just do. I like cow print, too. And  I also like Floyd the cow. Floyd is actually a sponge. And, OK, he was designed with babies in mind, but I can see no reason whatsoever that Floyd here shouldn't also be used by us Dollfaces, when we want something super-soft and squishy to clean our faces with. Something that maybe looks a bit like a cow, say.

Floyd costs £7.79, and you can buy him here.

Nivea Visage Natural Beauty Beautifying Moisturiser

Nivea visage Nivea Visage Natural Beauty Beautifying Moisturiser

Moisturisers don't generally get me particularly excited. Whereas serums carry with them the promise of knocking twenty tears off me, and mascaras are just the best! thing! ever!, moisturiser is… just moisturiser, really. That doesn't mean I don't like it of course, because I do (always cleanse, tone and mositurise, kids!) but I've never met one that's rocked my world, put it that way.

This one by Nivea Visage hasn't either – but only because I haven't actually tried it yet. I really want to, though, because as you can see from the tub, this is not just a moisturiser, but a "radiance boosting" moisturiser. Ooh! What's more, they claim it's so good at boosting your radiance, that you may not even need to use foundation. Which is why it's gone straight onto my Wish List, naturally.

How does it perform this miracle, I hear you ask? Well, it apparently contains light-reflecting particles, which help even out your complexion and give you that "glow". It also contains mango milk and cashmere proteins, to nourish the skin and keep it looking its best.

If it can make my skin look good enough for me to want to skip the foundation, it will be a miracle indeed, and at £8.79 per pot, it'll be a pretty cheap one, too. Read more about it here, and buy it at Boots. (It's not on the website yet, but check back soon.)

Jelly Belly lip balm – mmmm!

Jelly belly lip balm Jelly Belly lip balm mmmm!

I've written about – and drooled over – Jelly Belly's lip glosses here before, but as someone who doesn't actually use a lot of gloss (my hair gets caught in it. I hate that) I'm really pleased to discover that they also offer a lip balm version, too.

These are only £1.99 each, and come in six different flavours. I want all of them, but if you can decide which to go for, you can buy them from Amazon. Just try to resist the temptation not to eat them…

Clinique launch new High Impact Curling Mascara

High impact curling mascara Clinique launch new High Impact Curling Mascara

As some of you know, I'm addicted to my eyelash curler. It's my not-so-secret weapon in the fight to make my lashes look longer and more dramatic, and I've always found that curly lashes look longer, and make your eyes seem much bigger, than straight ones.

But there's no denying that some mornings I'd like to be able to just skip that step. I always warm my eyelash curler before using it, giving it a quick blast with my hairdryer: it would be quicker and easier if my mascara could just do the curling for me, but, to date, I've never found a curling mascara that would do that.

Could Clinique's new High Impact Curling Mascara be the one to change that? Well, the signs seem good, so far. The name alone is enough to attract my attention, and the "lash curler no longer required" tagline they're using to promote it also taps into exactly what I'm looking for. Furthermore, this claims to hold a curl for up to 24 hours, to be flake and smudge proof, and to be all-round brilliant, in fact.

So far, so very tempting, but the proof will be in the using. If you'd like to give it a whirl, it comes in brown or black and it's £13.21 from Boots.

Dollface Reviews: MeMeMe Shimmy Shimmer Gold Palette

Mememme shimmy shimmer Dollface Reviews: MeMeMe Shimmy Shimmer Gold Palette

Hey, look! It's a Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick! Except no, not really: it's a Shimmy Shimmer Gold Palette by MeMeMe, the brand that's renowned for making more affordable versions of high-end cosmetics.

This palette is £6.84 at Superdrug (it's not actually available on the website at the moment, so you'll need to visit a store to buy it), and as you can see, it bears a strong resemblance to the aforementioned Shimmer Brick. Now, I'm not going to lie to you: the quality isn't as good. The pigments aren't nearly as intense, and it doesn't last as long as the original. The packaging isn't as nice either:

Mememme shimmy shimmers Dollface Reviews: MeMeMe Shimmy Shimmer Gold Palette

At the end of the day, though, this is a budget product, and in that context, it's pretty good at what it does. The colours can be used anywhere on your face (or your body, for that matter) to add a subtle "shimmer" to the skin, and they can be used alone or blended together. This should be appearing on the Superdrug website soon, if you want to try it for yourself.

Dollface Reviews: Boots No 17 Fast Finish Nail Polish in ‘Nightshade’ (black)

Black nail polish Dollface Reviews: Boots No 17 Fast Finish Nail Polish in Nightshade (black)

Oh dear. I really wanted to like this. I'd wanted black nail polish for a while, but I'm kinda wishing I'd just gone for the Chanel one I really wanted rather than trying to save money here, because although Boots No. 17's fast Finish Polish is certainly cheap, at £2.88 per bottle, I soon found out why.

Despite shaking this thoroughly before using it, the polish was still very watery: so much so that I needed three coats to get it to the jet black shown above – the first just left my nails a watery grey, and the second wasn't a whole lot better. It does dry fast, which is one of its main selling points, but because I had to keep piling on more of it, I didn't really save any time, and some of my nails ended up looking a little bit lumpy.

Overall, not a great performance, although I guess you get what you pay for: if you're thinking of trying a new colour you know you won't wear all that often, this could be a good option as it's certainly cheap enough to let you experiment without spending a fortune. Unfortunately for me, the 'Cupcake' colour I also bought (a very pale pink, almost nude), intending to use as my "go to" polish for everyday wear was also very watery, and therefore difficult to apply, so I don't think I'll be trying this again. If you want to give it a go, though, it's £2,88 from Boots.
