Monthly Archives: September 2009Scholl Healthy Nails Nail Brightening System
The fact is, discolouration can happen to any of us who use nail polish regularly (especially those of us who are too lazy to religiously use a base coat. Not that I would ever do that, obviously. *whistles* ), so if you find yourself in that category, here’s a little product that just might help. It’s Scholl’s Healthy Nails Nail Brightening System, and is has a gel on one end and the actual nail brightener itself on the other. After filing the top of the discoloured nail, you apply the gel first, and then, once it’s dry, the brightener. The brightener goes on just like a base coat, and, indeed, will function like a base coat too – you can apply polish on top of it, and it’ll provide a smooth surface and prevent further staining. You should see an instant improvement in the colour of your nails, and if you use it once a week, things should be looking a whole lot brighter by the four week mark. After which, you can resolve, like me, to always use base coat in future. 2LoveMyLips – a lipgloss with a drug testing kit attached
I’ve seen a lot of different kinds of “multi-tasking” cosmetics in my time, but I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen a lipgloss that doubles as a drug-testing kit… The more I think about it, though, the more this seems like a really good idea. Sadly for all of us, date rape is something that’s becoming increasingly common, and this little kit allows you to find out if your drink has been spiked by dipping a simple pink taper into it – if it turns blue, it means it’s detected traces of either GHB or Ketamine, and you should alert the club’s security staff and call the police. If it remains pink, on the other hand, you can concentrate on using the gloss itself, which is a non-sticky formula that comes in five different colours. The gloss costs £9.99 per tube, and is available from the company’s website. Lancome Deluxe Brush Set
I badly need to replace some of my makeup brushes at the moment, and even although I know I’ll probably bow to the inevitable and get new ones from MAC, I’m still having fun looking at some of the other options out there. I was particularly drawn to this little set from Lancome: obviously the purple bristles won’t make the application any smoother, but they do make the brushes look cute, as does the little bejeweled wallet they come in. Inside the wallet you’ll find: Foundation Brush #2 Powder Brush #1 Precision Shadow Brush #12 Dual Ended Brush #18 Blending Shadow Brush #17 I haven’t tried these, so can’t say what they’re like to use, only what they’re like to look at! If you’d like to try them out for yourself, the full set costs $59 and is available at Neiman Marcus. Max Factor Pan Stik Foundation
Pan Stik! It’s the makeup your mother used to wear! Well, it’s certainly the makeup MY mother used to wear, away: I’ve heard her mention it often enough! I actually had no idea this was still made, and I have even less of an idea what it’ll be like to use – the name alone conjures up images of caked-on foundation, although I’m assuming the formula has been modernised at some point in the product’s long history. It claims to give a “soft, dewy finish” with maximum coverage, comes in four different shades and only costs £3.31 from Amazon, so at least it won’t cost too much to find out if it lives up to those claims. Modella Black And White Spot Mini Vanity Case
The fact that the word “mini” is used to describe this vanity case tells me that it probably wouldn’t be a whole lot of use to me, even for travel purposes. I don’t like to travel light, you see. The fact that it has polka dots on it and only costs £6, however, tells me that I’m probably going to covet it anyway. Well, you can always use another makeup bag, can’t you? Friday Face: Toned-down smokey eye using Myface Cosmetics Midnight Hour palatte
Knowing I had a Friday Face post to do prompted me to use some different products today, so that I wouldn’t just be repeating last week’s face! This is a very toned-down version of the smokey-eye – so toned down, in fact, that you could easily wear it to work, or anywhere else. I used MyFace Cosmetics’ Midnight Hour palette, shown above, and concentrated mostly on the eyelid, to get a wearable, day-to-day look rather than the usual dramatic smokey eye look we see, which tends to use a lot of shadow/pencil under the eye, too. With this, I wore: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer What makeup are you wearing today? Dollface Reviews: Boots Expert Cuticle Remover
As it happened, however, I didn’t have to search for very long, because so far I’m really liking the first one I tried, which is Boots own-brand Expert Cuticle Remover. This is a really gritty formula, which feels more like an exfoliator than a cream. As with most cuticle removers, you simply apply it to the offending area, leave it for a minute or so and then gently push back the cuticles with an orange stick or something. I actually wasn’t expecting too much from this, but I was impressed with the results: the product removed the cuticles quickly and cleanly, and didn’t leave me with the usual ragged edges, either. (Just to be sure, I use my Sephora Cuticle Pen afterwards, to give the area a but of nourishment. ) Boots Expert Cuticle Remover, £3.75 Anastasia Line Erasing Try Me Kit
Well hell, that would be a small miracle if it did all that! And it would justify the $40 price all by itself, too! As far as the price goes, however, this is $69 of products for the aforementioned $40, and I know I’d at least use the eye and brow products, so I think it’s a good deal. If you do too, you can pick it up at www.sephora.com Lime Crime Makeup: lipstick in just about every colour of the rainbow
Would you wear lime coloured lipstick? Turquoise? How about black? Nope, me neither, but someone out there would, and that someone is Doe Deere, creator of the Lime Crime range, which debuts its new ‘Candyfuture’ lip collection on October 18, including all of the colours named above, and more. Lime Crime’s tag line is “so bright it’s illegal”, which gives you some idea of what we’re dealing with here. These shades definitely aren’t for those of us who like the natural look – or even the classic “made up” look, come to think of it – but if you’re brave enough to wear the colours in the collection, you’ll be spoiled for choice, as there are ten shades to choose from, retailing for $16. These will be available from the Lime Crime website, which ships worldwide and offers free shipping on orders over $100. Check it out here.
