Monthly Archives: October 2009Important Message about Hey, Dollface! and Heart Internet web hostingHi everyone, First of all, huge apologies for the fact that the site has been down all day today. Secondly, you’ll probably notice that now that it’s back, it’s displaying posts from September. This is because at about 2pm today our web hosts, Heart Internet, contacted us to say that while they were working on our server they had managed to irretrievably lose the entire site – and all the rest of our websites – and that there was absolutely nothing they could do to recover it. Essentially, they told us Hey, Dollface! (and, indeed, all of our other sites) was gone for good. Yes. As you can see, that turned out not to be true and they have managed to restore most of the site. We have, however, lost just over a month’s worth of posts, and the posts we do have don’t currently have images. We have our own backup of those posts, but it will take us several days to get them back online, and unfortunately there won’t be any posts here on Monday because it’s going to take us at least until then to deal with the considerable fallout from this fiasco. We also currently have issues with comments, which aren’t working, and … oh, about a thousand other things which are being worked on right now. We’re really sorry for the interruption in transmission, and hope you’ll bear with us for a couple of days until we can get back on our feet. Amber

Friday Face: Illamasqua and MAC
The usual: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer NARS Orgasm blush Anastasia Brow Gel With: Illamasqua Rich Liquid Foundation – shades RF105 and RF120 blended MAC Iridescent Loose Powder in Silver Dusk (reviews of both of these coming next week) Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes! mascara in black MyFace Cosmetics Eye Pencil in Black Clinique Long Last Glosswear in 07 – ‘Bonfire’ What makeup are you wearing today? (Oh, and if you’re wondering why my URL is on the image, it’s because of this little incident, in which someone stole one of the photos from here and used it to try to sell false eyelashes on eBay. People!) Too Faced LashLight Mascara
The ol’ ‘lipgloss with a light in the lid’ has become fairly commonplace in the beauty world, but now here’s Too Faced with a mascara-with-a-light-in-the-lid. Ha! Didn’t expect that, did you? Or maybe you did. Maybe you frequently apply mascara in the dark, and all this time you’ve been thinking, “Lordy, if only someone would invent a light-up mascara!” And now someone has. It’s not just the lid that lid that lights up, though: it’s your actual lashes. Because this contains, according to Too Faced, “millions of microscopic mirrors”. This means that when you apply it, the light bounces off said mirrors, making your lashes look shiny and glossy. Or that’s the theory, anyway. It also thickens and conditions the lashes, and contains “Panthenol and Vitamins C and E keep lashes healthy and Red Algae increases Keratin resistance for maximum lash flexibility”. So now you know. Fancy trying it out? It’s $25 from www.sephora.com Dior ‘Boréale’ Crystal Lip Balm Pendant
Holy macaroni, an $80 lip balm! And, OK, it IS a rather pretty one, and most of that cost has probably gone into the case, rather than the balm itself, but still, I think it’s the kind of thing I’d rather have bought for me than by me. As well as looking generally bling-tastsic, this also has a bit of history to it: it was inspired by the Aurore Boréale Crystal—a Swarovski crystal created exclusively for Christian Dior in 1955. As well as the price, the other drawback here, though, is that that the gloss inside is only available in one colour – Pink Crystal, which looks to be a classic “Barbie” pink, and may not suit everyone. If you think it’ll suit you, though, this is available at Nordstrom. Lancôme ‘Ôscillation Powerfoundation’ Micro-Vibratin Polishing Mineral Make-up
Well, I guess it had to happen sooner or later, didn’t it? I mean, we’ve had vibrating mascaras for aaaaggges now, so it was long past time to move onto the next thing in makeup, and it looks like that “next thing” is… vibrating foundation. Yes, vibrating foundation. This is Lancome’s ‘Ôscillation Powerfoundation’. It’s a mineral, powder formula, and it comes with it’s own sponge applicator, which vibrates. Now, I use mineral foundation from time to time, and when I do, I have to tie and old towel around my neck because I am absolutely incapable of applying it – or any kind of loose powder, really – without getting it all over my clothes, and anything else that happens to be in the vicinity. Personally, then, I’d be even more concerned about this than I was about vibrating mascara wands, when they first came out. As it turned out, though, the mascara turned out to be no messier than normal mascara, so hopefully that’ll be the case here, too. Indeed, Lancome claim this is “never messy”, although it’s possible they didn’t have me in mind when they wrote that. So: why do we need our mineral foundation to vibrate? According to Lancome, it’s because the vibrating applicator will massage our skin and gently distribute the product over it, allowing “7,000 micro-vibrations per minute” to ”break down the featherweight mineral powder for seamless blendability.” Hmm. I don’t know. I’m super-fussy about how my foundation is applied. Put it this way: I wouldn’t normally allow another HUMAN to apply it for me, so I still have my doubts about allowing a machine to do it. The product itself sounds nice, though: the foundation promises 14-hour wear, contains SPF 21 and claims to give you “newborn skin”. I could be persuaded. Could you, though? If you could, this costs $48 and you can buy it at Nordstrom, amongst other places. Friday Face: Dainty Doll foundation revisited
No photo for today’s Friday Face, because my skin just isn’t fit to be seen at the moment. Truly. The culprit can be seen above you: it’s the Nicola Roberts’ ‘Dainty Doll’ foundation I reviewed back in April. I don’t wear this very often, because, as I noted in the review, although I LOVE the colour of it, it really is a terrible foundation, but my regular foundation ran out and this was all I had left to tide me over until some new stuff arrives. (Thanks, Royal Mail, for going on strike just when I ran out of makeup!) So, Dainty Doll it is, and once again, I’m disappointed. I always think I’m going to love this: it’s such a refreshing change to be able to use a foundation that’s actually the same colour as my natural skin (the ‘Ivory’ shade is perfect for me) and every time I use this, it makes me realise once again that all of those foundations I’ve been using, thinking they were pale enough? Really aren’t. As I said when I originally reviewed this product, I think we pale girls often end up settling for foundation that’s just “close enough” to our natural skin, and it’s only when you find one that really IS the right colour that you realise just how bad the others have been. So this is a great shade. I always get compliments when I wear it. But after a week of using it, my skin is so dry and flaky I actually don’t want to wear makeup AT ALL, and as the foundation is the only only I’ve been using that’s different, I’m left with the conclusion that it’s the reason why. And I’m not surprised either: it’s so thick and dry and chalky that it’s hell to apply, and it clings to any little bit of dry skin, making it look much worse than it actually is. Gah. I’ve ordered some Illamasqua, which should arrive next week, and will hopefully make things all better. In the meantime, today I’m giving by skin a break and am wearing lots of moisturiser in a bid to get things back to normal! Dollface Reviews: Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum
Remember how I didn’t ever come back and tell you what I thought of it? Um, yeah. That’s just because I fail at life, basically: it had nothing to do with the product itself, and when I tell you that as soon as the first two bottles were all used up, I went straight out and bought another one (well, I say “straight out” – I actually ordered it on the interwebs), you’ll probably guess that I liked it quite a lot really. And you’d be right, too. I’d been using the original version of Protect & Perfect, my review of which can be found here, and to be honest, the only reason I’m only now getting around to reviewing the “Intense” version is because there’s not really a whole lot else to add to that original review. To put it simply, this is one of those products that just works. I apply it morning and night, and if the bottle runs out and it takes me a couple of weeks to get round to replacing it, I will really notice a difference in my skin. When I use Protect & Perfect regularly, my skin is noticeably softer and smoother. Yes, there are still fine lines, and I can’t really say I’ve noticed much of a reduction in them in the time I’ve been using this, but it’s still worth buying as far as I’m concerned, because the difference it makes to my skin is huge. As for the Intense version, I’m going to be honest: I don’t really see much difference between it and the original, other than that Intense comes in the glass bottle P&P was initially launched in, before Boots switched it to a plastic tube. People will have mixed feelings about this: my mum, who’s also a Protect & Perfect fan, loves the bottle and hates the tubes; I also like the bottles, because there’s a nice, substantial feel to them, but I prefer the plastic tubes, purely because I know I can squeeze every last drop of product out them. Each to their own. However it’s packaged, though, I have no hesitation in naming this my Holy Grail Beauty Serum, and as soon as the current bottle runs out, I will be re-purchasing. Or, better yet, I’ll wait until Boots have one of their fantastic 3-for-2 offers on skincare, and get two of them. Plus maybe the eye cream… Weird and wonderful lip balms from ASOS
Now, maybe this has been going on for a while now, and I just haven’t noticed it, but lately it feels like there’s been an explosion in the number of weird and wonderful lip balms appearing on the market. There’s really something for everyone now: whether you like coffee, Christmas pudding, junk food or, er, dorks, there’s a lip balm for you. And it’s probably at ASOS, too. All of the products come from the ASOS website, and most only cost around £3 each (the Lip-O-Chino one shown was the most expensive, at £6), which makes it really tempting to just slip one into your basket next time you’re buying something from ASOS. And by “you” I mean “me”, obviously. I haven’t tried any of these, so I can’t tell you how realistic the taste will be, but what I CAN tell you is that “dorks” apparently taste like strawberries. Who knew?

Lily Lolo launch new mineral makeup kits in time for Christmas
Of all of the makeup brands that I hear talked about on a daily basis, I think Lily Lolo has to be one of the ones I’ve heard recommended most often. Most people who try this brand seem to rave about it, which is why I’m actually more interested in these new gift sets for myself than for the purpose they were actually intended – to be given as Christmas gifts. There are four new sets to choose from. My Most Wanted is the Complexion Perfection kit, which provides you with mineral foundation, finishing powder and kabuki brush (the basics to get you started in the world of mineral bases, then), but there’s also Get Up and Glow, which adds bronzer, cover-up and blush into the mix, Be Dazzled, including lipgloss, blush and eyeshadow, and an eye kit called Eye Spy With My Gorgeous Eye. The brand also seem to have wandered a little way down the Benefit path, with vaguely retro packaging and quirky product names, which will also help make these a nice gift for me a makeup-loving friend. You can buy them all from the Lily Lolo website. MeMeMe Colourama Long Lasting Cream Eyshadow – swatches[Sorry, the images on this post were lost when our hosts, Heart Internet, deleted the site by mistake. More information here.] I’ve had these MeMeMe cream eyeshadows in my “to try” box for absolutely ages now, but life has been increasingly hectic, as it always is in the last few months of the year, and I haven’t had a chance to try them out properly, so I thought I’d swatch the colours for you instead. This is a group of metallic colours, which is one of my favourite eye shadow looks, when I can be bothered to actually apply the stuff! The colours are Molten Brown, Sparkling Silver and Liquid Bronze, and you can see the swatches under the jump… | |||||||||||
