Monthly Archives: November 2009Dollface Reviews: Illamasqua Rich Liquid Foundation
I’ve been using this foundation for about a month now, and as I said in my swatch post, I’m having to mix two different colours (RF120 and RF105) to get the right shade. This is probably the biggest drawback for me, although I’m told Illamasqua are aware of the issues with the existing shades, and are working on bringing out more, so hopefully the perfect shade will be created at some point in the future! So, on with the review, and I’m going to start with the positives: the coverage. As the name suggests, this is a heavy-coverage foundation, in a rich, creamy formula. And, as such, it really does deliver: this covers freckles, blemishes, dark circles, you name it. I haven’t had to use a concealer with it for blemishes etc, although I have been using an under-eye concealer, because I feel the foundation is too heavy for that area. It has a tendency to crease around the eyes after a few hours, and as the skin around my eyes can be dry, it also clings to the dry patches and makes them look worse. The skin on the rest of my face is fairly normal, and I had no issues with the foundation there: in fact, I was really pleased with it. The finish is matt (I haven’t been using powder with it because I don’t think it’s needed) and flawless, and although I know some reviewers have found it difficult to blend, I haven’t had issues there either. I’ve been applying it with a foundation brush, and although it is thick, I find it goes on smoothly and blends quite easily. A little goes a long way, too, so although it’s expensive, it will last a long time. After about four weeks of use, it hasn’t made me break out, either, which was something I’d worried about before buying it. So far, so good, then. Such heavy coverage isn’t without its drawbacks, though. Although I find the foundation easy to apply and blend, it’s also very easy to apply too much of it, and if you’re not very careful, it can start to look caked-on. When I first bought this, there were a couple of occasions where I applied my makeup in my bedroom, as usual, and then walked into the brighter light of the bathroom, glanced in the mirror and immediately reached for my cleanser to wash it all off again because in the harsh light of day, it looked drag-queen esque. This isn’t entirely the foundation’s fault, obviously: it requires a light hand on the application, a very small amount of product, and I’ve also heard a couple of people recommend applying it with a sponge rather than a brush. (I’ve run out of sponges, so I haven’t tried this yet!) As well as the dryness around my eyes, I’m also prone to the occasional touch of dryness around the nose and mouth, particularly when I’m stressed. When this happened, I had to abandon Illamasqua for a couple of days because even with the best efforts of my moisturizer and primer, it would still cling to the dry patches and be very visible. Mixing it with moisturiser may help here, but I’d prefer it to work right out of the box – or bottle, rather. Ultimately, while I like this foundation, and LOVE the coverage it provides, it’s a lot of work to use and isn’t really a foundation you can put on in a hurry. It requires careful application, a good primer, and even then it’s not great on dry skin, so for me will probably be a product I’ll use on special occasions /good skin days rather than on a day-to-day basis. If you want to try it our for yourself, it’s £19.50 and available direct from Illamasqua, although, as I noted in my swatch post, I really recommend visiting a counter first to choose your shade! Limited Edition crystal-capped nail polish from Nails Inc
These are by Nails Inc, and the colours are, from left to right: Henrietta Street, Bow Street and Warwick Avenue. I like all three of them, but of course, the thing I REALLY like here is the bottle caps, which are covered in crystals. They’re limited edition, so would be nice to have if you’re a bit of a polish collector, but their glitzy appearance could also make them a nice gift, too. They cost £15 each, and are available at Nails Inc. More Twilight-themed makeup to coincide with the New Moon launch
Yes, folks, the Twilight bandwagon is well and truly in town, and the beauty world has enthusiastically jumped aboard. I’ve already shown you DuWop’s ‘Twilight Venom’, but now here’s a whole range of makeup inspired by the books/films/the desire to make money. With names like “Just Bitten Staining Balm” and “Immortal” body shimmer, these are clearly designed to appeal to Twilight fans, and whether they’ll appeal to anyone else will depend very much on the quality of the products, and whether there’s anything about them that will make them last beyond the final film. If you want to find out for yourself whether that’s the case, the range is available at ASOS.com, and you can take a look at it here. Meanwhile, here’s Kristin Stewart’s makeup (probably NOT Twilight branded) from the New Moon LA premiere: ![]() Kristin Stewart, New Moon premiere

Leighton Meester’s makeup at the American Eagle opening: what do you think?![]() Leighton Meester at the American Eagle store opening Do you subscribe to the old “lips OR eyes” look, readers? Leighton Meester’s makeup artist obviously doesn’t: here’s Leighton looking almost unrecognisable at the opening of American Eagle’s new Times Square store in heavy eye makeup, heavy foundation, and bright red lipstick. On their own, I think any one of these would’ve worked just fine. All together, though… well, I love Leighton, but I’m not really loving this particular look on her, it has to be said. What do you think? Anya Hindmarch Lips and Eyes canvas cosmetics case
I’ve mentioned before that makeup bags tend to be a budget buy for me – partly because my collection lives in my Sephora case day-today, and only moves into a bag for travel purposes, but also because I can’t seem to own makeup without spilling it and generally making a mess with it, so I don’t want to pay too much for something that will be filthy within the week! I’m going to leave this one for the rest of you, then, because while it’s not hideously expensive, at £45, it IS also white – and soon wouldn’t be once I got my hands on it. For the less clumsy among you, then, it’s by Anya Hindmarch, and is available at Net-a-Porter. Christmas Beauty Gifts: Liz Earle gift box with face and body essentials
Dollface Reviews: Garnier Clean & Fresh Eye Makeup Remover
This product was something of a panic buy. My regular eye makeup remover (Botanics Soothing Eye Makeup Remover, which I SWEAR by) had run out, the Boots website was out of stock, and as I normally wear waterproof mascara, which doesn’t come off easily, I picked up a bottle of Garnier’s Clean & Fresh Eye Makeup Remover in the supermarket, thinking it would at least do the job. I was wrong. This definitely didn’t work on my waterproof mascara. Even after a couple of minutes of rubbing (which I really don’t like to do because it’s so bad for the delicate skin around the eye) I was looking a lot like a raccoon, with most of the mascara still clinging determinedly to my lashes, or gathering around the eye area. Even when I thought I’d removed it all, I’d cleanse my face, look in the mirror and discover that, nope, still looking like a raccoon. “OK,” I thought, “I’ll switch to a NON-waterproof mascara.” But I didn’t fare a whole lot better there either. Sure, the product did manage to remove more of the mascara than it did with the waterproof stuff, but it still took lots of rubbing, and a couple of attempts to get rid of it all. The final straw came this weekend when I started to apply my makeup and then decided to wash it off and start again, because my foundation looked terrible. The only product on my eyes at that point was my usual Urban Decay eyeliner, and this product didn’t even remove that very well – all it did was shift the liner from my eyelid to the under eye area and then force me to do a lot of rubbing to remove it from there. After that, enough was enough- I headed out yesterday and bought two bottles of my usual eye makeup remover, so at least this time I’ll have a backup. If you’d like to give this a try, though, it’s £2.93 at Superdrug. Asda Essential Care Self Tan now back in stock!![]() Asda fake tan - yay! I know it’s not really the season for a sun tan, but today, readers, I bring you glad tidings: having discontinued their Essential Care Self Tan back in the summer, Asda have decided to bring it back! I actually had a comment from a reader letting me know about this a couple of weeks ago, and I have to say, I didn’t dare hope it was true, but here’s the evidence, as seen in my local Asda yesterday. (Aside: you’d be surprised at the number of funny looks you get from people when you take a photo of fake tan on your phone in the supermarket. Or maybe you wouldn’t be, actually). The queues were all about a mile long, so I didn’t buy any, but I’m off on holiday in three weeks, so rest assured, I will be back to stock up! As you can see, this is only £3 per bottle, and I find it better than any of the more expensive brands I’ve tried, so Asda: thank you. You’ve made this Dollface very happy! | |||||||||||
