Celebrity Beauty: Jennifer Lopez wears a beehive to the premiere of The Back Up Plan

Back up Plan 9 Celebrity Beauty: Jennifer Lopez wears a beehive to the premiere of The Back Up Plan

Ever since my experiment with the Bumpit, I’ve been obsessed with big hair and beehives, so I was interested to see Jennifer Lopez turn up to the London premiere of The Back Up Plan last night with her hair in a massive ‘hive. Although the dress and hair were competing for attention a little bit here, I do love this hairdo, and there’s a little part of me (OK, let’s be honest: it’s quite a big part of me) that wishes this kind of style would make a full-scale return to popularity, and it would suddenly become totally acceptable to walk around with a giant head of hair, even if you were just going to the supermarket or office.

Of course, I suspect I’m far too lazy to want to go to this amount of effort every day (and wow, but getting all that backcoming out would be a PAIN, wouldn’t it? Unless, of course, J.Lo’s wearing a false hairpiece here, which she very well may be.), so my big-hair dreams will probably never come true, but what does everyone else think? Do you love this look?

Found! The Hair Scroo!

hair scroo Found! The Hair Scroo!

Remember the Hair Scroo? They’re the hair grips from the 90s which I was obsessed with finding a couple of years ago, because they’re basically the ONLY thing that actually holds my hair up, and which I’m able to use without hours of arm-aching faffing around. I did eventually manage to track some of these down on eBay – in fact, I’m wearing them right now – and bought enough to last me for the rest of my life, but I know some of you out there are still looking for them, so you’ll be pleased to know that the Hair Scroo has been tracked down by my lovely readers!

Several of you have contacted me over the past couple of weeks to tell me that the “scroos” in question are available to buy at Goody. They call them “Spin Pins” and for $14.99 they’ll send you two of them, plus a “Pony Pouf Clip” and a “Modern Updo Maker”. I want all of those, don’t you? If you do, click here and go get ‘em!

Thanks again to everyone who contacted me about this!

Guerlain L’Or Makeup Base – infused with gold

guerlain LOr Makeup Base Guerlain LOr Makeup Base infused with goldIsn’t this pretty? And isn’t it… expensive? Well, it is to me, anyway. It costs $70, which is more than I’m typically willing to pay for a single item of makeup, but I guess the fact that it’s infused with particles of 240carat gold does explain the price!

Does it make it worth buying, though? Well, this is described as a “skin enhancer”: Guerlain say it will smooth away fine lines, tighten the skin on the face and help it retain its moisture. It’s basically a primer, then, although it can also be used on its own, if you’re one of those lucky people who has no need of foundation. I’m happy enough with my current primer (Smashbox Photo Finish) to not be overly tempted by this at the moment, but what about you? If you want to try it out, it’s Gueralin L’Or Makeup Base and you can buy it at Saks.

Dollface Reviews Invisalign Clear Braces: The upper tray arrives

invisalign aligner Dollface Reviews Invisalign Clear Braces: The upper tray arrivesOh my holy hell.

After a few weeks of wearing my Invisalign brace on my lower teeth, I thought I was totally prepared for the first tray for my uppers. Sure, the first week or so had been harder than I’d anticipated: while the brace wasn’t painful, it had taken me a while to get used to the sensation of having something in my mouth all the time, and at first I’d frequently found myself thinking I was going to gag (I didn’t). After about a week of this, though, I was completely used to it, and was barely even thinking about it any more, so I headed off to collect the next tray for my lower teeth and the first set for my uppers feeling fairly confident that this would be a fairly easy transition.

I was wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Lancome Teint Idole Fresh Wear 18 hour makeup

lancome fresh wear Lancome Teint Idole Fresh Wear 18 hour makeupLately I’ve been looking a lot like an oil slick. Yes, I know, it’s an attractive imagine, isn’t it? It’s true, though, and while I can control the shine to some extent with a good primer and mattifying powder, sometimes a girl needs a little something extra, and as my current foundation is nearing the end of its life, my attention has turned to Lancome’s Fresh Wear 18-Hour Makeup.

Why? Well, this is a lightweight foundation that promises to control shine, and deliver a totally matt, “pore free” complexion for up to 18 hours. I’d like to be pore-free, wouldn’t you? (Not literally, obviously. Those things do come in handy…) And I’d like to be perfectly matt for 18 hours, so I guess the only remaining question is, do I want to pay $32? If I do, I can pick this up in Sephora next month (not that I’m counting down the days or anything*), or visit a Lancome counter to try out the ten different shades. If you have normal to oily skin, you may well want to join me, in which case, you can order online here.

* 36 days, just in case you’re wondering

Models Own Solid Colour Lip Balm Pots

models own lip balm Models Own Solid Colour Lip Balm Pots

I know there are a few of you out there who, like me, love lip balms, but need a little more colour than they typically provide in order to look human rather than dancer vampire, so I thought these little lip balm pots by Models Own (it always really bothers me not to use an apostrophe there, but it IS how the brand name is written, so…) might be of interest. They’re balms rather than lip colours, but they are highly pigmented, which means there should hopefully be none of that “barely there” colour that’s perfect on all you (lucky) dewy-skinned English Rose types and not so useful on us “If I fell asleep on the beach, people would think I was a corpse” types.

There are three shades to choose from, two of which are available at ASOS, for £5 each. I actually sometimes wish ASOS.com DIDN’T sell beauty products: it’s just far too tempting to slip a little something into my shopping basket next time I’m indulging my shoe obsession over there!

Corioliss mini vintage travel hair dryer

travel hair dryer Corioliss mini vintage travel hair dryerIsn’t this cute? And isn’t it strange to be referring to a hairdryer as “cute”? Sure, they’re handy, and I for one would rarely leave the house without mine (Or without having used it first, I mean. I don’t generally walk around in public with my hairdryer. Well, hardly ever.), but pretty? Nah, not so much. This one is, though, which makes me wonder why more hairdryer manufacturers don’t do things like this? I’ll be honest: I’m easily led by stuff like this. I hate the stereotype that women can;t possibly know anything about electronics, but even so, show me a gadget with a vintage-style floral print and I’ll be all over it. And I will shun the plain black version that’s sitting next to it.

This, then, is why I like Corioliss’s mini travel hair dryer. You always need a travel hairdryer, don’t you? If you need one rightthisverysecond, this one is £25.99 at HQ Hair.

Dollface Reviews: Eldora Handmade False Eyelashes in style C144

eldora false eyelashes revi Dollface Reviews: Eldora Handmade False Eyelashes in style C144

Given my obsession with eyelashes, when UK based eyelash-maker extraordinaire Eldora got in touch to ask if I’d like to try out some of their lashes, I naturally jumped at the chance. I asked for some fairly natural looking lashes as, sadly for me, my lifestyle just doesn’t often call for the more extravagant feathered or glittery styles the site offers! I was really pleased with this set, though, which you can find on the website as style C144. As you can see, they’re really natural enough for everyday use, although they’re still long and spiky enough to give your eyes some nice definition and make them look bigger.

The lashes come with their own adhesive, and are as easy to use as any other false lashes I’ve tried, which is to say “a little bit fiddly if you’re not used to them, but only a little bit.” I’ve been wearing them all day, and although they look fairly obvious in the photo at the top of this page, when viewed straight on, I think they look natural enough to get away with for just about any occasion.

This particular set costs £4.50, but there are dozens more to choose from at the Eldora website.

Dollface Reviews: The Bumpit!

bumpit review Dollface Reviews: The Bumpit!

I know, I know: beauty blogger in “Bumpit review” shocker! It seems like everyone has been trying out these lately, and I’m a little late to the party, but a few weeks ago I finally succumbed to the lure of the Bumpit, which, as most of you will know, is a plastic hair grip designed to create lots of volume, or beehive-style bumps.

I bought my set on eBay, and it only cost about £3. For that, I got one large Bumpit, two regular sized ones, and two mini “bang Bumpits”, like the kit below:

bumpit Dollface Reviews: The Bumpit!

The Bumpit is supposed to allow you to create volume without backcombing, but I have very fine hair, and found I did need to backcomb it slightly before using this, partly to get it to grip properly, and partly to hide the teeth of the grip. Even then, I found that the grip can still be seen if you look closely: I’m not sure if that’s purely because of the type of hair I have, or whether I need to do a bit more backcombing.

That aside, it’s very straightforward to use, and you simply place it on your head (the teeth will grip onto your hair) and then comb hair over the top of the Bumpit to hide it. Here’s what the regular Bumpit looks like from the side:

Dollface Reviews: Estee Lauder Sumptuous Waterproof Bold Volume Lifting Mascara

estee lauder sumptuous lift Dollface Reviews: Estee Lauder Sumptuous Waterproof Bold Volume Lifting Mascara

Waterproof mascara? That promises to lift the lashes? This was always going to be one I’d want to try, so when Estee Lauder sent me a sample of their Sumptuous Waterproof Bold Volume Lifting Mascara last week, I couldn’t wait to try it out.

The name really tells you everything you need to know about this product. I was sent it in 02 – Brown, but it’s also available in black, and if you prefer a non-waterproof product, well, they do that too. When it comes from mascara, my preference is for products that make the lashes stick up towards the eyebrows (this makes your eyes look much bigger than a product that lengthens but doesn’t lift), and keep them there all day, and to my delight, that’s exactly what this does.

In the image above, my lashes are curled, and I’m wearing mascara on the left eye only, to give you an idea of the difference it makes. This mascara creates a spiky effect, and looks a little clumpy in the image, probably because I layered on quite a bit if it – it’s actually much better after one or two coats, but, me being me, I can never resist adding just one more

This also gives a nice lengthening effect, and because it’s waterproof it doesn’t smudge or run, although it does remove easily enough with my trusty old Boots Botanics Soothing Eye-Makeup Remover.

It costs £18 per tube, and is available from Estee Lauder direct, or anywhere with an Estee Lauder counter.
