Category Archives: Beauty NewsRunway Beauty: Dior Fall/Winter 2010I love Dior: if nothing else, the runway show is always a true spectacle, and this one was no exception. While the big hair may not be the most wearable of looks on a day-to-day basis, I think it looks fantastic on the runway, and I love the herringbone plaits, too. Dark lips and flawless skin complete this look: take a look under the jump for some more images…

Bobbi Brown’s ‘Pretty Powerful’ campaign uses “real” women rather than models
Bobbi Brown has used a similar approach for her latest campaign, which is called “Pretty Powerful” and which also uses “real” women as opposed to professional models. Bobbi says: “Pretty Powerful symbolizes my belief that all women possess natural beauty, and with the right tools, are empowered to a higher level of pretty: Pretty Powerful. After so many years of seeing similar ‘cookie-cutter’ beauty and fashion images in the media, I do hope that we will start to see a cultural shift towards a more realistic potential for all women.” I will admit to having some issues with the phrase “real women” as it’s currently used in fashion magazines, where “real” is often just synonymous with “curvy”, and fails to acknowledge that women come in ALL shapes and sizes, but I do love the idea expressed here that we can ALL feel beautiful, and find something to celebrate about ourselves, regardless of our age, size or perceived flaws. There are some more images from the campaign under the jump. What do you think? Runway Beauty: White faces and topknots at Marc Jacobs SS 2010![]() What happens when you don't colour-match your foundation From white eyeliner at Donna Karan to totally white faces at Marc Jacobs. Looks like white will be big in the beauty world next summer, then? Marc Jacobs went for a very severe, stylised kind of look at his show this week: the models all wore their hair in topknots (well, it’s a cheap alternative to a facelift, isn’t it?), faces were chalk–white, with eyes and lips emphasised. Of course, my face is more or less that colour naturally, so at least I’ll be in fashion: not sure the rest of you would fancy the “different-coloured-face-and-body” thing, but I’m sure we’ll not be expected to translate this look too literally. (Although it would be fun if everyone did, no?) I must say, I do love the eyes here, but think this very severe hairdo is best left to… well, very few of of us, to be completely honest. Runway Beauty: White eyeliner at Donna Karan S/S 2010
I’m still getting to grips with the arrival of winter, but the fashion world has already moved onto next Spring – lucky fashion world! At Donna Karan, models wore white eyeliner all around the eye:
The rest of the face was left fairly nude, so this is an easy-to-achieve look – assuming you actually want to achieve it, that is. I have a white eyeliner from Urban Decay, so I may have a play around with it and see what this looks like in real life. What do you think, though? Will you be reaching for the white eyeliner next Spring? Illamasqua now available at Sephora
Illamasqua is a name that's probably familiar to anyone into beauty, so the news that the cult British brand is now available to buy in the US too is probably good news to those of you who haven't had access to the products so far. They're being sold exclusively at Sephora, and if Sephora would care to return the favour by making THEIR products available to those of us here in the UK, that would be great. Well, it seems only fair, doesn't it? I'm ashamed to admit that I've been slow to jump on the Illamasqua bandwagon and have yet to try any of the products, despite hearing very good things about them. I'll be sure to try and rectify that soon, and if you'd like to try them too, go to www.sephora.com

No makeup or Photoshop on the cover of French Elle
Much has been made of French Elle's decision not to use makeup or any Photoshop retouching on its cover this month. The fold-out cover features images of Monica Bellucci, Eva Herzigova, and Sophie Marceau, all completely barefaced, and, of course, all three women look beautiful I'm in two minds about this, though. On the one hand, I think it's great that a magazine has decided to show women looking completely natural. I'm sure we're all well aware of the damage the impossibly high standards set by beauty magazines etc can do to women's psyches, and it's very refreshing to see "real" images being used, rather than ones that have been Photoshopped to such an extent that they bear little resemblance to the woman being photographed. Or is it? The cynical side of me is tempting to say that this only works because, let's face it, these women are all stunning anyway, with or without the help of cosmetics. I mean, it's not like anyone's going to look at these images and think, "Oh, good, models/actresses are just like us, after all! It was just makeup and Photoshop that made them look good!" I know I don't look that good without makeup – or with it, for that matter – so I wonder if this will really make women feel better about themselves, or whether it just goes to show that a beautiful woman is a beautiful woman, whatever she wears – or doesn't wear – on her face? What do you think?

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie immortalised in, er, lipstick
This definitely has to count as the most bizarre beauty story of the day… Artists Willard Wigan has spent more than 50 hours carving the images of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie into two tubes of lipstick, in conjunction with beauty website feelunique.com. Don’t worry, there is a reason for this: the lipsticks are to be auctioned off on eBay, with proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Campaign, and if you click here you can read more about it. Before you do, though, you may just like to take a look under the jump, where you’ll see close-ups of Brangelina’s lipstick likenesses…

New drug promises to give us longer eyelashes
A new drug called Latisse has just been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and claims to give users longer lashes. The active ingredient was apparently originally used to treat glaucoma, but once the manufacturers realised it had the not unwelcome side-effect of making lashes grow, they clearly spotted a money-making opportunity and jumped on it. The drug will be available in the US from March, and will cost around $120 per month. Side effects include itchy eyelids and redness around the lid, but it may also make the hair on your head grow faster, too. So, what does everyone think of this? Would you take medication to make your eyelashes grown longer, or will you be sticking with the falsies and the mascara? [Source]
