Revisited: NIVEA' My Silhouette! sculpting gel cream

Nivea_my_silhouette Back in April, when I first mentioned  NIVEA's My Silhouette! sculpting cream, I said I thought it would be a difficult product to review properly. This turned out to be true, not just for the reasons I gave in the earlier article, but because, well, it turns out I'm not too hot at remembering to apply body lotions every day.

(Is this just me? There never seems to be a good time to do it: if you do it at night, you have to go to bed all sticky, and if you do it in the morning, you have to put your clothes on while you're sticky. In other words: I fail at using body creams. Add to that the fact that I've been testing out a few self tanners recently and couldn't use the NIVEA product underneath them without risking patchiness - or more patchiness than I risk anyway when I try to fake tan - and, well, you can see my dilemma).

Bath Cakes - where beauty and cup cakes collide

Bathcakes

Oh. My. God. You see that? That's not a cup cake. No, that's a bath bomb, and I think I'd need the "not for eating" label to be attached to it ALL THE TIME, because man, but it looks tasty. Doesn't it look tasty?

Given that it's meant to be tossed in your bath, I think it's probably safe to say that it ISN'T tasty, but it's certainly cute, and it contains a mix of essential oils, minerals, butters and milks to make your skin feel soft.

I think these would make such a cute gift, either for yourself or for someone else (Or for me, maybe), and if you agree, they're $5 each, or 6 for $25 from here. Yum.

Jelly Pong Pong Egg Confetti for the bath

Egg_confetti

At first glance, this product looks more appropriate for Easter than for the end of summer, but hey, an indulgent treat is an indulgent treat, no matter what the season, right?

Jelly Pong Pong's Egg Confetti is certainly indulgent: the hand-painted eggshells are filled with a fizzy powder that you empty into your bathtub and then simply relax into. You can choose between apple and rhubarb or blackcurrant and ornage scents, and each box costs £10. A nice idea for a gift, as well as for yourself, these are available direct from Jelly Pong Pong.

Too Drunk? Let Lush's emotibomb soothe your hangover

Too_drunk I've always believed that the only thing that really cures a hangover is sleep, water, and lots and lots of both. If you want to try something a little different, though, Lush's 'Too Drunk' contains essential oils of peppermint, marigold, fennel and reviving sweet orange, and claims to help wake you up, soothe your aching head, and generally help you feel like a member of the human race once more. All you have to do is stick it in the shower or bath and wait for it to work its magic.

Will it work? Who knows. They also recommend using it when you don't have a hangover, though, to make you feel even better. Sounds like it has to be worth a try...

Korres Summer Cocktails - shower gels for summer

Korres_summer_cocktails This morning I received a press release which opened with the words, "Now that the summer appears to be over..." No! Say it ain't so! Here at Dollface Towers, summer only really got started last Thursday, and now it appears to MIA again, so I was really hoping for at least a few more weeks of warmth. If that's not going to be possible, though, I guess I'm going to have to turn to beauty products to try and cheer myself up and hang onto those last dying rays of summer...

These Summer Cocktails by Korres sound like they could be up for the job. No, they're not real alcohol, sadly: they're shower gels inspired by cocktails, and they come in three "flavours" - Ginger Cosmopolitan, Vanilla Daiquiri and Melon Mojito.

The travel-sized bottles make them great for those of you who still have a holiday to look forward to. As for the rest of us - well, we can always pretend...

Buy: Korres Summer Cocktails, £9 for three

Sushi Soap from Perpetual Kid

Sushi_soap

We've had soaps that smell like food before, many a time, but here's some soap that actually looks like food - like sushi, to be precise. This sushi soap is from Perpetual Kid (great name!) and actually looks too good to use to me. I'd be tempted to just set it out in the bathroom and smile at it every time I walked by. Or, if I was feeling particularly evil, I could always set in out in the kitchen and wait for Mr Dollface to find it...

Manly Man soap - soap for, er, manly men

Manly_man_soap Is your man a manly man? Well, d'uh! Of course he is! In that case, he's going to need some equally manly soap - well, you can't have him using the girly, floral scented soap you use, can you? And anyway - it's yours.

Luckily, this Manly Man soap should be manly enough for any man. Made with Clary Sage and Vetiver, its makers at Etsy say it will "musky and full aroma that could, perhaps, inspire acts of heroism…
or taking out the garbage." It can also work as an aphrodisiac, but they had me at the "taking out the garbage" bit...

Buy: Manly Man soap, $4.50

Bliss Fat Girl Sleep - Fat Girl Slim for bedtime!

Fat_girl_sleep Fat Girl Slim, by Bliss, is one of those products that's been on my wish list for a while now - and no, not just because the name makes me smile! It's one of those products that uses caffeine to help slim down your thighs, belly, arms, or anywhere else you want to use it.

Now that I've discovered the nighttime version, Fat Girl Sleep, though, I'm tempted just to bypass Fat Girl Slim altogether and go for this one instead. Working on the same principles as the original, this releases its goodness over a period of six hours, so you can put it on before you go to bed and wake up slim. Well, no, not quite - if it could do that it would cost a helluva lot more than $38, but it will mean that you don't have to worry about slathering on body cream in the mornings, when you're struggling to wake up for work.

Buy: Fat Girl Sleep, $38

Philosophy's Breakfast in Bed set - another great Mother's Day Gift

Philosophy_breakfast_in_bed

Of course, it figures that as soon as I finish writing the Mother's Day Gift Guide, I find something that would make an even more perfect Mother's Day Gift. It's Philosophy's Breakfast in Bed (if anyone makes better gift sets than Philosophy, I don't know who it is), and it contains three bottles of Philosophy's 3-in-one shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath in the delicious-sounding Cafe Au Lait, Fresh Cream, and Belgian Waffles. Once again I find myself wondering, "Why is it that so many beauty products make me want to eat them?"

Jelly Pong Pong Soap Popsicle

Jelly_pong_pong_soap_popsic Another Jelly Pong Pong product, and this time I have a very serious question: what's the point of flavoured soap? Sure, this looks super-cute and very appealing to a packaging-whore like myself, but ASOS claims that it's a "flavoured" soap, which has got me wondering, WHY? It's not like you're going to eat it, after all, so I'm assuming they mean "scented" - they do, indeed say that these popsicles "smell like the real thing".

The "real thing" in this case is either neapolitan, the love stick, loony lemon, watermelon or lolli-choc, and any one of them will set you back just £5. The "loli choc' one does look like someone's taken a bite out of it, though....

Buy: Jelly Pong Pong Soap popsicle, £5

Dollface Reviews NIVEA My Silhouette! sculpting gel cream

Nivea_my_silhouette It's actually going to be pretty tricky to provide an accurate review of NIVEA's new My Silhouette! gel, which claims to help you lose up to three inches on the areas you apply it to (Bums, legs and tums, basically), because I'm currently trying to up my exercise regime in order to get in shape for my holiday, so it'll be hard to know whether any results come from the gel or the gym!

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, though: I measured my thighs this morning (The things I do for this blog!) and will aim to apply My Silhouette! to them morning and night for the next month, and let you know how I get on with it.

So far, the first surprise is the colour: My Silhouette! is a vivid green, which I totally wasn't expecting when it came out of the tube. That aside, it has a fresh, fruity smell (I may be going mad, but it reminds me of a perfume, although I can't put my finger on which one!) which is nice and invigorating to use in the morning, and it absorbs quickly into the skin. Will it give me thinner, smoother thighs, though? I guess I'm about to find out...

(Remember, you can try out My Silhouette! for yourself by visiting the NIVEA blog and requesting a sample...)

It contains White tea and Anise extract, and Nivea say their tests have shown that it can cause a reduction of up to 3cm on the areas targeted. Will it work? Well, I guess you'll have to go get your sample and see!

Dollface Reviews: Lush 'Sweetie Pie' shower jelly

Sweetie_pie I actually bought this for my husband, because he loves unusual bath products, especially if they come from LUSH Cosmetics, but who could blame me for occasionally stealing a little bit for myself every now and again?

Actually, it's pretty hard to resist helping myself to some Sweetie Pie because this stuff is gorgeous: Lush say it smells like "Donuts and cherry muffins", and while I can't identify the scent quite that specifically, I will agree that it smells totally sweet and very edible.

This is a bath jelly, which might make you think that it's just going to disintegrate on contact with water, but Lush jellies are made of sterner stuff than that, and it will stand firm while you use it in exactly the same way you'd use a soap. A little goes a long way with this, too, so you simply break off a little bit, use it and revel in the gorgeous scent.

The scent, of course, is the major attraction with this; as well as being sweet, it's also very long lasting, which means that I'm instantly caught out every time I try to steal it because my husband can smell it on me as soon as I come near him, and it'll also leave your bathroom smelling sweet, too. Lovely.

Animal shower cap from ASOS - Moo!

Showercap I don't actually use shower caps, but ASOS point out that this one will both "brighten any bathroom" and make a "fun gift", and I think I'd have to agree with them. I mean, who doesn't want to take a shower while looking like a devilish cow?

If you do, you can pick one up for £just 50p, and they also have a more "regular" set of devil horns available too. Love it.

Dollface Reviews: Nirvana Spa's Orange Smoothie Shower and Bath Gel

Ornagesmoothie If it seems like I've been doing a lot of talking about bath and body products lately well, yes, guilty as charged. The thing is, we recently revamped the bathroom here at Dollface Towers, and now that it's all sparkling and fresh (and, to be honest, feels a little bit like a bathroom in a hotel or something) I've been motivated to spend a lot more time in it - and, of course, to buy up lots of lovely bath products! Well, they look nice sitting on the shelves, even it will take me months to get round to using them all...

Anyway, one such product purchased purely to help me make the most of my new bathroom was Nirvana Spa's Orange Smoothie Shower and Bath Gel. It's pictured here with the matching body scrub, which I haven't tried, but probably will because this stuff is seriously orangey.

My main reason for choosing a fruit scented shower gel was that I was hoping the citrus smell would help wake me up in the morning. This certainly does that, and leaves the bathroom smelling or oranges for a long time afterwards, too. The liquid itself is nice and thick - you only need a small amount of it to do your whole body, and while it doesn't give much of a lather, when used as a bubble bath, it does build up some satisfyingly big and frothy bubbles, which stick around for as long as you do, rather than just melting instantly, like some cheaper brands.

I bought this from Asda, but you can also buy it from Nirvana Spa's website

Dollface Reviews: Gelicity Gel Spa Bath

For Valentine's Day, Mr Dollface and I both opted to give each other gifts themed around the idea of "We've got a new bathroom and by God, we're going to use it", so I got him a selection of stuff from Lush (Terry is actually a man, I promise, he just really likes Lush) and he got me this:

Gelbath

Yes, it's Gelicity'sGel Spa Bath. It turns your bathwater into... gel.  And as soon as I laid eyes on it, I realised there was only one thing to do: force Mr Dollface to act as my model in a quick guide to how to actually use the stuff. Look after the jump, then, for Mr Dollface's Guide To How To Have A Gelicity Spa Bath...

The Agent Provocateur Gift Set for Valentine's Day

Agentprovocateur Agent Provocateur - they don't just make frilly undies, you know. (Although they do that too. Rather well, actually...) This is their attempt to capture the Valentine's Day market, and it's a boxed set containing their Eau de Parfum and matching body wash.

Even the name 'Agent Provocateur is enough to suggest that lurve is in the air, so this could make a good gift, although personally I'm always wary of buying people perfume unless I'm absolutely sure it's a scent they know and love.

If you're willing to take the risk, you can pick this up at Boots for £39.

Valentine's Day Beauty Gifts: Kama Sutra Body Souffle Cream

Kamasutra

For those of you who are hoping for a Valentine's Day that'll be just a little bit raunchier than gifts of soapy rose petals and pink shower gel seem to suggest, how about some Kama Sutra Body Souffle . This isn't just body cream: it's "kissable" body cream, so it's a good job it tastes like chocolate creme brulee, then, isn't it? It's designed for "sensual massage", which makes it the perfect Valentine's Gift, although maybe not for someone you've only just met/haven't yet kissed ...

Buy: Kama Sutra Body Souffle

Valentine's Day Gifts: Aquolina Chocolovers Bath Hearts

Valentinesday_2

Yes, we're back on the Valentine's Day gift trail, but don't worry, there's only a few more days of this to go before we can forget all about hearts and flowers for another year, and start thinking about Easter Eggs instead. Oh, go on, you know you love it...

So, Valentine's Day. Let's face it: you know you're going to get either chocolates or bath products - maybe even both, depending on how lucky you are. If you're very lucky, you may even get these Cholcolovers Bath Hearts by Aquolina, which dissolve into the bath water, leaving it lightly fragranced - with chocolate, I would assume. Sadly, you can't actually eat them, so if you really are a Chocolover, I'd recommend buying a big bar of Tobelerone to go with them. That's what I'm doing, anyway.

The Valentine's Day Beauty Gift With the Longest Name...

Valentinesday_3 OK, this definitely has to win the "product with the longest name" award. It's called - are you ready for this? - Not Soap, Radio The stuff that cupid dips his arrows in (because sometimes fate needs an assist) bath/shower gel. Fairly trips off the tongue, doesn't it?

Even more amusingly, it's part of a whole range of products with similarly, er, memorable (or not so memorable, depending on your point of view) names. This one is a bath/shower gel, and it's infused with ginseng, which will apparently help boost the pheromones that make you more attractive to others? Will this product be attractive to you, though? It'll cost you $9.95 to find out.

Valentine's Day Beauty Gifts: Handmade soap rose petals

Valentinesgift The old "bed strewn with rose petals" may seem like a bit of a cliché, but a luxurious bath filled with them - now that sounds just fine by me, although maybe that's just because my bathroom still resembles a building site at this point in time.

Enough about me and my bathroom, though: onto the Valentine's Day goodies. (Yes, I'll stop write about them just as soon as the cosmetics companies stop making them...)

Smiley Therapeutic Bath Purifying Milky Tablets

Bathsalts

It's "Smiley" by name, and if the claims are to be believed, this product will make you smiley by nature, too, because it contains micro-nutrients designed to "activate happiness". Or so it says, anyway. Well, I don't know about you, but it's the end of January, it's still cold, dark and miserable outside, my house has just been flooded and my car goes into the garage tomorrow for the second time in a week: yup, I really could be doing with having some happiness activated round about now.

As well as making you happy, these milky bath tablets will also cleanse your skin. Well, Cleopatra used to bathe in asses milk, didn't she? Maybe this is just the version for the 21st century.

'Honey, I Washed the Kids!" - handmade soap from Lush

Lushsoap At the weekend, Mr. Dollface, who can't walk past a branch of Lush without going in and buying something - I have him well trained - picked up a bar of Honey I Washed the Kids for our bathroom.

I've never met a Lush soap I didn't love, but this one is particularly gorgeous, and has been really cheering me up when I jump into the shower on these cold, grey January mornings. It contains honey, bergamont and aloe, which makes it particularly soft and nice on the skin. Love it.

Dollface Reviews: Coastal Scents Sugar Butter Delight body scrub

Sugarbutter_delightThis is one of those products that look so enticing you just have to try it. When it arrived, I initially thought it looked like cotton candy or whipped cream in a jar (yes, I still have that problem with wanting to eat my cosmetics), and that's just fine by me.

It's Coastal Scents' Spa Excel Sugar Butter Scrub, and it's neither cotton candy nor whipped cream, but a mixture of shea butter and sugar which you use in the shower to slough off dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling soft and supple. The accompanying literature told me that once I'd used this, there would be no need to apply body lotion, as the scrub is moisturising enough, and as wonderful as that claim sounded, I was a little dubious about whether it would turn out to be true or not.

Luckily for me, it did. I tried the Coconut Melon scented version (it also comes in Vanilla, Lavender and unscented), and the smell was much more "melon" than "coconut" - in fact, it left a lovely, lingering smell of fresh melon in the bathroom after my shower, and made me think of tropical islands and sun-soaked islands while I was using it. Which was nice.

The granules are on the large size, so you don't need to use too much of this to achieve the desired effect. As I rubbed them in, I could feel the shea butter spreading over my skin, and my skin quickly became coated with it, a little like the effect you get with baby lotion, although without the icky greasy feeling.

By the time I was dry, my skin was feeling soft, moisturised and melony. Lovely stuff, and a good buy for $11.95 per pot.

Urban Decay's 'Marshmallow' body shimmer. At last, a cosmetic you can actually eat!

Urbamdecaymarshmallow I know I talk a lot here about beauty products that look and smell so good that you almost want to eat them, but Urban Decay have just become my new heroes by making their Marshmallow body shimmer, which you can actually eat.  Praise the Lord!

Not only will it make your skin shimmer, the claim is that it also tastes exactly like real marshmallows - and because it's likable, you don't have to take their word for it, you can find out for yourself. I'm tempted. I'm very, very tempted...

Do you say Yes to Carrots?

Yestocarrots

Having spent a large part of my youth being referred to as "carrot top" (it's one of those "redhead" things), you'd think I'd hate the damn things by now, but nope, I love 'em. Carrots are tasty, nutritious, and may or may not help you see in the dark, so it makes sense that a hair, skin and body range would be all those things too, doesn't it? Well, maybe not "tasty", so much...

The Yes to Carrots line doesn't just contain carrots, though. It uses juices from the orange color' produce groups plus Dead Sea Mud to create a range of products for the hair, skin and body. Mud masks, day and night moisturisers, body lotions, shampoos and conditioners all contain these essential ingredients to help make you glow - but hopefully not orange.

It's available at Walgreens.

Creme de Corps by Kiehl's

Christmasbeautry Another day, another Christmas body-care gift set, and this time Kiehl's step up to the plate with their Creme de Corps gift set. Rather than just the usual body lotions, though, this set also includes an Amino Acid Shampoo and a lip balm, as well as the brand's super-enriched body moisturiser and Ultimate Strength hand salve - both of which will probably be exactly what you'll need if the weather where you are has been anything like as harsh as the weather here at Dollface Palace.

These are great products, so $34 for the lot sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Ps-Zu body butter, hand cream, lip balm... shoe polish?

Pozu

Talk about multi-purpose! This coconut oil from Po-Zu does all of the stuff you'd normally expect coconut oil to do: conditions your hair, makes your skin soft, works as a lip balm... The big difference here, though, is that once your skin and hair is in tip-top condition from using it, you can rub it into your shoes too, for a quick polish! Oh, and you can eat it. And cook with it. See what I mean by multi-purpose?

It costs £5 per tin and will be on sale from the end of this month  at Terra Plana and The Natural Store.

Philosophy's 'Candy Cane' hat box gift set

Philosphycandycane

When it comes to holiday gift sets, I think Philosophy wins the house cup. Their products are custom-made for gift-givers: I mean, buy this 'Candy Cane' hat box set for some lucky person and you probably won't even need to wrap it up because it'll look fab under the tree just as it is. (Yes, I'm lazy.)

Inside you'll find candy cane shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath (8 oz.), candy cane exfoliating hot tub and shower scrub (3.5 oz.) and candy cane lip shine, all infused with the smell of peppermint. It's $35 at Nordstrom.

Lush's 'Charity Pot Body Lotion' - get beautiful for a good cause

Lushcharitypot Most of the time when companies decide to offer a percentage of their profits to charity, that percentage will be just 10% or less. This body lotion from Lush, though, really is a 'Charity Pot' by nature as well as by name, because when you buy this, Lush will donate 100% of the proceeds to charity (click here to see the charities who'll benefit). Isn't that fantastic?

The product itself is a hand and body lotion made from fairly-traded cocoa butter from the Dominican Republic and Ivory Coast. It costs $19.99, and would make a nice gift for an ethically-minded friend (or for yourself, of course!).

Jelly Belly bath salts!

Bathsalts

I really shouldn't blog about beauty-products-that-sound-like-food right before dinner, because between these Jelly Belly Bath Salts and The Body Shop's Cranberry Body Butter, I'm now absolutely starving! Now, I had no idea that Jelly Belly made bath salts, but they do, and I can only imagine how deliciously edible they must smell.

You can buy two tubs for £5, choosing between either Very Cherry and Watermelon scents or Cotton Candy and Blueberry. Yes, now I'm really hungry...

The Body Shop launch new Cranberry Body Polish, Body Butter & more

Bodyshop

I'm long overdue a visit to The Body Shop, if only to bask for a while in the glorious smell of the place. And, OK, maybe to pick up some of their new, limited edition 'Cranberry' line while I'm at it. There's a body polish, body butter, bath and shower gel to collect, and the cranberry scent makes a nice, Christmassy touch. Just be careful you're not tempted to eat it...

Juicy Couture make Juicy Crittoure - perfumed for pampered pooches

Dogperfume

I know I'm addicted to smelly stuff for the bath and body, but my dog? Not so much, really. (Well, he is, actually - just a different kind of "smelly stuff"). He doesn't care whether he's bathed in the finest designer shampoos or the supermarket's own brand - just so long as he gets some sort of sweetie and the end of it all. And given that he's likely to go outside and roll in something awful as soon as his fur's dry, I'm inclined to stick with the budget brand for him, myself.

Clearly, though, me and my dog are alone in this. In fact, there must be enough people in the world willing to splash out on expensive pet products for Juicy Couture to have felt the need to launch an entire line dducated to just that. It's called Juicy Crittoure, and the line includes:

  • Shampooch:  A tearless shampoo. 8 ounces.
  • Pawfum: Eau de parfum. 1 ounce.
  • Pawtection: Softening paw balm. 1.7 ounces.
  • Unleashed Pawfum Limited Edition Eau de Parfum: Four pawfum refills included. 0.17 ounces each.

Prices start from $25 and the range is available at Neiman Marcus. Now go fetch...

Soap & Glory 'Do the Bath' Gift Set

Soapglory

Like Lush and Benefit before it, the Soap & Glory range is perhaps best known for its quirky product names and retro packaging. In this 'Do the Bath' gift set, for instance, you get a 500ml bottle of 'Calm One, Calm All' bath soak, a 250ml 'Flirtigo' fragranced body mist, a scented candle and a bath pillow. So, um, not so much with the "quirky" on the last two, then...

It's only £12, but these products look more expensive than they actually are, making them a nice stocking fller for a fellow beauty addict.
