Friday Face: High End Heroes

friday face with rubin Friday Face: High End Heroes

(I actually took a few photos for this post. Only one of them featured Rubin – he loves the camera, and as soon as he sees it, he comes running – but as soon as I saw it I knew it had to be the one I used: hee!)

For my last Friday Face post, I did an all-budget look, using products which all came from the supermarket or chemist/drugstore. This week, I thought I’d go the other way, and do a high-end face, using some not-so budget products! I call these my “High End Heroes”, because while I’m willing to experiment with budget products and try out anything and everything, I can’t afford to do that with their pricier counterparts so these products are the ones I love to death and (with a couple of exceptions) always re-purchase when they run out. The products are:

Friday Face: Beauty on a Budget

budget beauty look Friday Face: Beauty on a Budget

Just for fun, I thought I’d make today’s Friday Face a budget production, so all of the products I’ve used are available from your local supermarket or chemist rather than from specialist beauty counters, and most are under £5, although I think the lipstick I used is closer to the £10 mark, making it the most expensive product of the lot.

Next week I’ll try out these products’ high-end sisters, but for today’s face, take a look under the jump for the product details!

Friday Face: End of February

friday face browns1 Friday Face: End of February

It’s been a while since I last did a Friday Face post, and technically I’m not doing one now either, because this is actually my Thursday Face. Whoops. I’m not going to have time to post on Friday, though, so this one is actually a blast from the past, so to speak. Anyway, I’m wearing:

Philosophy ‘The Present’ Clear Makeup Primer
I hardly ever use this, but every now and then I’ll get it out and give it a whirl. Today I left plenty of time for it to soak in, which is the key to using this product, and I was pretty happy with it. Still not a patch on Smashbox, though.

Maybelline Pure Makeup Foundation in Porcelain Light
Definitely my favourite foundation of the moment, which means they’ll probably have discontinued it by the next time I’m in the States and able to re-stock.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit and Under Eye Corrector PLUS a touch of Urban Decay’s 24/7 concealer, which is totally not designed for the under-eye area, but which is really thick and really pale, and, combined with the Bobbi Brown products, just about hides the shadows. (Although, that said, I’ve managed to get a little more sleep over the past couple of days, and have made an effort to drink loads of water, and they’re definitely looking better than they were at the start of the week.)

Jelly Pong Pong Nude & Improved Eye Shadow Base - I have this in ‘Au Naturel’, which is definitely not “nude” on my skin, but it is a pretty good base – my eyeshadow hasn’t budged all day.

MyFace Cosmetics Band of Gold Eyeshadow Trio and Blusher in Paradise Pink.

Urban Decay Glide-On Eye Pencil in Bourbon

Lancome L’Extreme  – of COURSE.

Benefit Brow Zings

Urban Decay Lipstick in Buzzkill and Lip Pencil in Wicked.

Oh, and please excuse the hair - it’s overdue a trim and is going through one of those “impossible to deal with” stages.

What makeup are you wearing today?

Friday Face: Lather, rinse and repeat…

friday face jan 29 Friday Face: Lather, rinse and repeat...

I’ve been rushing around all day today, so this week’s Friday Face isn’t just on the late side, it’s also more or less a repeat of previous faces. (“Hi, Im Troy McLure! You may remember these products from such Friday Faces as ”January 8th, 2010′ and ‘The one with the hat’“) This is what laziness does for you, kids.

Anyway, as well as the usual Maybelline/Lancome/Diorshow/NARS mix, I think the only real difference here is the exchange of YSL’s Touche Eclat for Bobbi Brown’s Creamy Concealer and Corrector. I’ll have a review of both of those up on Monday as they’re new additions to the Dollface arsenal. In the meantime, I hope everyone has a great weekend: but before you do, remember to tell me what’s on your Friday Face!

Friday Face: Hats offon

hey dollface beauty blog Friday Face: Hats <strike>off</strike>on

A slightly belated Friday Face today, thanks to my camera batteries dying on me: they always know how to pick their moments! Anyway, I wanted to try and get a photo in what passes for natural daylight at this time of year, so this was snapped in the garden as I braved the (now melting, thankfully) snow to take the dog for his walk.

I’ve been very lazy today, though, and have basically just used most of the same products as last week (and yes, hats seem to be becoming a theme, too: sorry about that!). I think the only difference here is that the eyeliner was only applied to the waterline of my upper lashes, and the lips are bright pink rather than bright red this week. This colour is actually mostly pencil: I lined them and shaded them with Myface Cosmetics Lip Pencil in ‘Berry’ (from the ‘Fair’ collection), which is a pinky-red, and added Revlon Colorstay in 010, ‘Premium Pink’ on top. For some reason, this shade of the Colorstay isn’t as long-lasting as the red I was wearing last week, so the lip liner helps it stay put.

What’s everyone wearing this Friday?

Friday Face: Snow Days

This is what I’ve been looking like this week – well, on the rare occasions I’ve ventured out of doors, anyway:

friday face Friday Face: Snow Days

Not a disguise, just looks like one

Yes, we’re having a whole lot of snow, and it’s not even a little bit fun, trust me. And actually, I’m seriously tempted to just keep the sunglasses* and hat on ALL the time at moment, not because of the cold, but because this weather is seriously playing havoc with my skin and hair. My skin is dry and lifeless, my hair is static and, er, lifeless, and although I’m doing my best to keep drinking lots of water, let’s just say I’m not exactly at my best right now.

This is why there’s no photo of my makeup today. But let the record show that I’m currently wearing:

Maybelline Pure Makeup Foundation in Porcelain : I bought another three tubes of this while I was in the US last summer. I still absolutely love this foundation. It’s water based, which works much better on my skin than oil-based foundation, and is more comfortable to wear when my skin’s feeling a bit dry. It’s also one of the best colour-matches I’ve been able to find: the ‘porcelain’ shade is really pale, and this tends to be the foundation I reach for on days when I’m feeling lazy and want something I can apply quickly and know it’ll look good.

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat under the eyes: I currently have dark shadows like you wouldn’t believe. Absolutely nothing has worked on them, and the aforementioned dry skin issue means that most cream conditioners just make matters worse, so I’m currently going for a “less is more” approach to the problem. This doesn’t cover the shadows (and I wouldn’t expect it to – it’s a highlighter, not a concealer), but it does more than most products I’ve tried recently.

Anastasia Brow Gel : This is dangerously close to running out – must find a replacement soon!

Urban Decay Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero : I just bought a new one of these – love it!

Lancome L’extreme Waterproof Mascara, with Diorshow Blackout layered over it: After bagging out Diorshow yesterday, I decided to wear it today on top of my usual L’Extreme, which is starting to dry out a bit, and not performing at its best. And… I loved it. I’d forgotten how glossy and black Diorshow is, and it made my lashes look much thicker and longer than L’Extreme alone, so maybe I’ve judged it too harshly. I’m certainly loving it today, anyway!

Revlon Colourstay Lipstick in Top Tomato – I’ve worn this a lot since my initial review of it, and I even went out and re-purchased it when I lost my original tube (it obviously turned up the INSTANT I returned home with my new purchase). It’s a much nicer red than my original photos show, and I’ve been going through a “bright red lipstick” phases recently, so I like the fact that I can put this on in the morning and then go about my business of, er, drinking coffee, without having to touch it up constantly. It’s not the best lipstick in the world, and I know a lot of people don’t like it, but it seems to work for me.

And there we have it! What’s your Friday Face this week?

*People tend to tease me (or just roll their eyes at me) for wearing sunglasses all the time, but the combination of brilliant white snow and equally brilliant sunlight makes it a lot like living in a ski resort at the moment: the light is absolutely dazzling. And I have really light-sensitive eyes, anyway, so sunnies it is!

Friday Face: Dainty Doll foundation revisited

Dainty doll foundation1 Friday Face: Dainty Doll foundation revisited

No photo for today’s Friday Face, because my skin just isn’t fit to be seen at the moment. Truly. The culprit can be seen above you: it’s the Nicola Roberts’ ‘Dainty Doll’ foundation I reviewed back in April. I don’t wear this very often, because, as I noted in the review, although I LOVE the colour of it, it really is a terrible foundation, but my regular foundation ran out and this was all I had left to tide me over until some new stuff arrives. (Thanks, Royal Mail, for going on strike just when I ran out of makeup!)

So, Dainty Doll it is, and once again, I’m disappointed. I always think I’m going to love this: it’s such a refreshing change to be able to use a foundation that’s actually the same colour as my natural skin (the ‘Ivory’ shade is perfect for me) and every time I use this, it makes me realise once again that all of those foundations I’ve been using, thinking they were pale enough? Really aren’t. As I said when I originally reviewed this product, I think we pale girls often end up settling for foundation that’s just “close enough” to our natural skin, and it’s only when you find one that really IS the right colour that you realise just how bad the others have been.

So this is a great shade. I always get compliments when I wear it. But after a week of using it, my skin is so dry and flaky I actually don’t want to wear makeup AT ALL, and as the foundation is the only only I’ve been using that’s different, I’m left with the conclusion that it’s the reason why. And I’m not surprised either: it’s so thick and dry and chalky that it’s hell to apply, and it clings to any little bit of dry skin, making it look much worse than it actually is. Gah.

I’ve ordered some Illamasqua, which should arrive next week, and will hopefully make things all better. In the meantime, today I’m giving by skin a break and am wearing lots of moisturiser in a bid to get things back to normal!

Friday Face: Toned-down smokey eye using Myface Cosmetics Midnight Hour palatte

toned down smokey eye2 Friday Face: Toned down smokey eye using Myface Cosmetics Midnight Hour palatte

Knowing I had a Friday Face post to do prompted me to use some different products today, so that I wouldn’t just be repeating last week’s face! This is a very toned-down version of the smokey-eye – so toned down, in fact, that you could easily wear it to work, or anywhere else. I used MyFace Cosmetics’ Midnight Hour palette, shown above, and concentrated mostly on the eyelid, to get a wearable, day-to-day look rather than the usual dramatic smokey eye look we see, which tends to use a lot of shadow/pencil under the eye, too.

With this, I wore:

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer
Maybelline Pure Makeup foundation in No. 1, Porcelain Ivory
Urban Decay 4/7 Concealer in CIA
Yves Saint Laurent Touch Eclat
Myface Cosmetics eyeliner pencil in black
NARS Orgasm blush
Miss Groovy Lip Poison
