Dollface Reviews: BIC Soleil Scent razors and Soleil Lady shaving gel

bic soleil scent Dollface Reviews: BIC Soleil Scent razors and Soleil Lady shaving gelThe good people at BIC sent me this little kit way back at the start of December, which meant it arrived just in time for my holiday. (Is it just me, or does anyone else buy new razors and other toiletries when you’re going away somewhere? I’ve no idea WHY I do this, now I come to think of it, but I always have.)

Anyway, I’ve been using both products for a few weeks now, and have been pretty impressed. The razors are from the Soleil Scent range, and are amazingly good value for money, given that you get a pack of four for £2.99. I’ve mentioned before that I don’t tend to spend a lot of money on razors anyway, and generally find that the cheap disposables do a good enough job for me. The nice thing about these ones is that although they’re certainly cheap, they don’t feel or look cheap: they’re satisfyingly smooth and chunky and they come in a range of pretty colours, which obviously doesn’t make a bit of difference to the performance, but does make me smile, because I’m superficial like that.

As for the performance, they score well there, too. My one criticism is that I don’t notice any  scent from these unless I press my nose to the handle. Which isn’t something I tend to do all that often, I must admit! Admittedly, the scent is a nice one (sweet and floral, I’d say, although I don’t have much of a nose for scents!), but as I always shave my legs in the shower, it does get lost amongst all of the other scented products in there!

More importantly, however, these razors are easy to use: they give a nice, smooth shave, and are a good shape for getting around those awkward areas like knees and ankles. I’ve been using then with Big Soleil Lady Gel, which contains Aloe Vera and Vitamin E, and leaves my legs feeling soft. It has a more noticeable smell, and it’s a lovely one, too: I’ve also been impressed by how long it’s lasted so far – it comes out of the can as a gel, but quickly lathers up into a rich foam, so a little goes a long way. It costs about £3, and is available from chemists, supermarkets and all the usual suspects!

Beauty Question: Do you shave your legs in the winter?

shaving legs Beauty Question: Do you shave your legs in the winter?

Following on from yesterday’s post about bikini lines and their general maintenance, I have another hair-removal question for you all, this time about legs. Do you shave/wax your legs during the winter?

The reason I ask is because, at around about this time every year, I start to hear and read  a lot of comments from women to the effect of “it’s a shame that summer’s over, but at least we can stop shaving our legs now!” And this has always surprised me a little, because even although my legs are generally hidden underneath trousers or tights during the colder months, it’s never actually occurred to me to stop shaving them: partly because it only takes a few minutes in the shower anyway, but mostly because it’s such an ingrained part of my daily routine now that I wouldn’t feel properly “groomed” without doing it.

Oh, and also because the hairs on my legs are blond, and blonde hair poking out through black opaque tights isn’t a good look, trust me.

What about you? Do you look forward to lower-maintenance legs in the winter, or is shaving or waxing a year-round occupation? Maybe you don’t bother at all and just leave them the way nature intended? Tell me!

The Body Shop Body & Leg Shine

Body and leg shine The Body Shop Body & Leg Shine

I seem to be writing an awful lot about bronzing products lately. Sorry about that. I think it's fair to say I'm a little bit obsessed at the moment. The reason lies, not within my makeup bag, but within my wardrobe. You see, having spent far too long stuck in the work-from-home rut of pulling on a pair of jeans and a tank top every morning and calling it an "outfit", this year I'm determined to get some use out of my vast selection of dresses, even it kills me. Which it wont, of course, but there's a good chance that my blindingly white legs might kill someone else, hence the bronzer obsession.

This is the latest product to cross my radar, and it's from The Body Shop. It's called Body & Leg Shine and.. can you guess what it does? Go on! YES! It makes your body and legs shine. In a good way, though, because this is an instant bronzer that comes in a handy, twist-up case, and which apparently "glides" onto your skin anytime you need it to. And then it glides off again, in the shower.

St Tropez Everyday Perfect Legs – a self tanner just for your legs

St tropez St Tropez Everyday Perfect Legs a self tanner just for your legs

Here in the UK, the weather can change on an daily – and sometimes hourly – basis. Most of the time, of course, it's miserable, which makes all the faff of self-tanning seem like a wasted effort, most of the time. But then one morning you'll suddenly wake up to glorious sunshine, and curse the fact that you didn't make like the Boy Scouts on the preparation front, because that summery skirt or dress you now want to wear just doesn't look quite the same with your pale blue legs.

With no time for a self-tan to develop, you could opt for a self-tan makeup, of course – or you could opt for St Tropez's Everyday Perfect Legs. This combines a gradual self-tanner with a hint of bronzer, so your legs will look instantly browner, but the colour won't wash off in the shower when you get home from work, because underneath that glow, the self-tanner will be getting to work.

This also comes with St Tropez' Aromaguard fragrance technology which they say makes it 70% less smelly than regular fake tan. So you don't have to sit at your desk smelling like biscuits, basically. That can only be a good thing…

Dollface Reviews: Gillette Venus Embrace razor and SatinCare shaving gel

Venus embrace razor Dollface Reviews: Gillette Venus Embrace razor and SatinCare shaving gel

This will possibly come as a surprise to some of you, but I've never really been one for waxing or depilating or any of the other methods of removing hair from my legs. I shave them in the shower every morning, and it suits me fine, although it has to be said that some razors are better than others – and Venus Embrace by Gillette is one of the best Ive tried.

This razor has five blades, which adjust as you shave to make sure they get every hair. They really do, too: the razor head is a little larger than most, which took a bit of getting used to (like, a few seconds worth), but it is definitely effective at getting rid of hairs. It's also next to impossible to cut yourself with it (I say this as someone who has cut herself shaving more times than she'd really care to remember, which may make you wonder why I've never re-thought my "no waxing" position): it has a "ribbon of moisture" (i.e. a band of gel) that makes the shave very smooth and safe.

I've been using this with Gillette's SatinCare gel in Alluring Avocado. It goes on as a gel but turns into a really thick, creamy lather on contact with water. Result: super smooth legs, happy Dollface.

Michael Kors Leg Shine To Go

kors leg shine Michael Kors Leg Shine To Go The season of bare legs is long gone here at Dollface Towers (actually, it was gone by mid-June, depressingly enough), but I always live in hope of an Indian summer, which is why I found myself adding this Michael Kors leg shine to my wish list this week. Well, you never know when you’ll need shiny legs, do you?

This particularly appeals because, as well as heaving your legs looking shimmery and sleek, it’s also scented (I don’t know what Michael Kors perfume smells like, but I’m prepared to believe I’d like it) and comes in this cute little twist-up container which you’ll be able to pop into your bag for those moments throughout the day when we find ourselves thinking, "Oh my God, my legs need more shimmer and they need it NOW!" Happens to us all…

Smokin’ Hot Legs Kit

smokin hot legs 4803e18d885eb Smokin Hot Legs Kit

If you read yesterday’s post about Abs in a Box, you may well have found yourself thinking, "Wait: if that’s what makeup can do for my abs, what can it do for my LEGS?" I know I did. Well, here’s what it can do for your legs, folks:

hot legs Smokin Hot Legs Kit

Yeah, it’ll make them smokin’ hot, that’s what!

Now, I personally think this model’s legs were already pretty hawt, but for those of us who could be doing with a little bit of shading and shadowing, this is the same drill as the abs kit: you get a selection of leg makeup (which is water and sweat proof), plus instructions on how to apply it in order to make your legs look like the illustration above. Hopefully.

This also costs $69, and takes the art of using makeup to enhance your appearance to a whole new level. I mean, I’m used to waking up with my face looking completely different to how it looked the night before, when it was covered with makeup, but I guess it would be interesting to wake up with a completely different body, too. Especially for anyone you happened to be with at the time…

Butter London’s Silk Stockings for perfect legs

silk stockings Butter Londons Silk Stockings for perfect legs

Another Butter London product, to allow me to continue my obsession with perfect legs!

This isn’t a self-tan makeup, or "tights in a jar" product, unlike some of the products we’ve talked about recently. Instead, it promises to hide blemishes and "brighten" the legs, leaving them soft and smooth, so I’m guessing it’s a kind of concealer/moisturiser.  It has a slight shimmer to it, which will make it a good product for those summer days when you want to go bare legged, but don’t quite have the confidence in your legs to do it. Makes sense to me: we use foundation and concealer on our faces without a second glance, after all, so why not on the legs, too?

As with the Butter London Stiletto Stick we featured last week, this is fairly pricey at £21, but it looks pretty lush, too.

Guam Seaweed Mud gives you firmer thighs in 45 minutes, apparently

guam mud Guam Seaweed Mud gives you firmer thighs in 45 minutes, apparently

I read about this in the August edition of Vogue, and was instantly intrigued by the claim that it gives you "visibly firmer limbs" in just 45 minutes. The catch is that you have to wrap your legs in cling film after you’ve applied the stuff, but you know, how we suffer for beauty…

It’s Guam Seaweed Mud, and yes, it really is made from pure, concentrated seaweed, which is said to simulate, tone and firm the skin. It’s £32.95 from HQ Hair – clingfilm not included, I’m afraid.

Pretty Polly Love Legs Bronzed Leg Gloss

pretty polly Pretty Polly Love Legs Bronzed Leg Gloss Ever since I discovered my love of fake tan makeup, as opposed to fake tan itself, I’ve been on the lookout for other products that will give me a bit of a bronzed glow, but wash off in the shower.

Pretty Polly’s Love Legs Bronzed Leg Gloss promises to be one of those products. They say it’ll "help to smooth out any skin imperfections and gives an appearance of a sexy glow whilst moisturising", which all sounds good to me, and I also love that slightly retro packaging, with the pin-up girl illustration.

It’s fairly expensive at £8 for 75g, but I’m guessing the lack of streakiness will make up for it. They also do a Sheer Silk Leg Makeup which looks worth checking out if you want a little more colour.
