Guest Post: How to make your eyes pop….. (not literally)

Kerry Walker writes…

Ever noticed that your eye colour really seems to ‘pop’ with some eyeshadow, and not with others?  If you want to know how to make the most of your beautiful brown, gorgeous green or bonny blue eyes, then you have to go back to primary school.  Because it’s all about the colour wheel.

Exhibit A: Colour Wheel

Colur wheel Guest Post: How to make your eyes pop….. (not literally)

In order to accentuate the colour of your eyes, you should choose an eyeshadow colour that is opposite your eye colour on the colour wheel.  For instance, I have blue eyes (well, they are really grey, but I like to say that they are blue) and opposite blue is orange.  This doesn’t mean that you have to have fluorescent mango coloured lid!  Just look for colours with orange-y tones.

Exhibit B: Eyeshadows with Orange-y tones:

Here’s some examples:

Don’t be afraid to play around with eye shadow colour.  Just remember to use brush, not those horrid sponge applicators, and to always blend, blend, blend.

How to look good when you have the cold – makeup tips from Charlotte Tilbury

909939 tissue box How to look good when you have the cold makeup tips from Charlotte Tilbury

I'm having a Bad Face Day. Actually, scratch that: I'm having a bad face week. You see, I have the cold. (I also have a huge spot the size of a second head, smack in the middle of my forehead, but that's another post altogether…) As well as making me feel like hell, it's also been making me look like hell: red nose, dull skin – oh, and the tickly cough has stopped me sleeping too well, which means I get giant eye bags and dark shadows into the bargain.

No, I'm not looking my best, it has to be said.

At times like this, however, I thank the Lord that I'm a makeup addict. It means I have at least a few weapons at my disposal to try and beat the Bad Face Day blues. Here, makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury gives us her tips for how to look good even when you don't feel it – take a look under the jump to read them!

Tutorial: How to Dye Your Own Eyelashes

Eyelash_dye A step-by-step guide to dyeing your eyelashes at home…

Some beauty treatments should always, always be done in a salon, by professionals who know what they’re doing. (Cutting your own hair is a prime example of this…)Others, though, you can do equally well in the comfort of your own home, for a fraction of the price you’d pay a salon – and one of these is eyelash/eyebrow dyeing.

Now, as regular readers will know, I have been cursed with pale, almost translucent eyelashes since I was born. Without mascara, I actually look like I don’t have any eyelashes at all, and because that’s not exactly a look I aspire to (and it makes me look like I’ve been in some terrible, eyelash destroying accident), as soon as I discovered it was possible to have my lashes dyed, I’ve been doing it.

I’ve had my eyelashes dyed at more salons than I can remember. Cheap ones, expensive ones, ones that come to your office… The results have varied. Sometimes it’s been great, sometimes it hasn’t made much of a difference. Sometimes it’s been cheap, sometimes it’s been expensive. Almost every time, my eyes have stung horribly because of dye getting into them and I’ve emerged from the treatment looking like I’ve been up crying all night. After a while, I worked out that eyelash dyeing is just one of those things that it’s just easier to do yourself, and given how quickly my eyelashes grow, it’s most definitely cheaper.

Here’s my guide how to do it*…

How to apply individual false eyelashes: Eyelure Lash Extend Ultra Natural Lash Extensions Review

Individual_false_eyelashes

Despite being the mascara obsessive I am, every now and then I like to dabble in the world of false eyelashes – or, more specifically, individual false eyelashes, which are a great way to cut down your morning makeup routine, and add a bit of length to your lashes without having to use half a tube of mascara every day.

This week I discovered Eyelure’s new Lash Extend Natural Lash Extensions in my local Boots, so of course I had to buy a pack, and because I’ve been asked a few times now about how to apply individual false lashes, I thought I’d write a quick tutorial while I was trying these out for the first time. Read on to find out how I got on…

Dear Dollface: Mascara without the smudges

Dollface Amy writes,

Dear Dollface,

I know you’re a bit of a mascara queen, so I’m hoping you can enlighten me on how to actually apply the stuff without getting it all over my eyelids? I have fairly long lashes, and every time I apply my mascara, no matter how carefully I do it, I’ll end up with bits of mascara all over my eye socket and lid. Help! What am I doing wrong?" ~ Amy

How to Get the False Eyelash Effect From Your Mascara

Falseeyelashes

False eyelashes are fiddly, difficult to apply, and prone to falling off at the worst possible moment. (Or they can be, anyway). That doesn’t stop us from loving the look of them, though, and it hasn’t stopped me from buying every lengthening mascara I can get my hands on, in the hope that it’ll allow me to recreate that false-eyelash effect with just the sweep of a mascara wand.

It’s not quite as simple as that, of course, but I have finally arrived at a technique I’m happy with. Here’s how I do it…

You’ll need:

* One pair of eyelash curlers

* One waterproof lengthening mascara – I use Lancome L’Extreme How to Get the False Eyelash Effect From Your Mascara in noir.

* One fibrous lengthening mascara – I use Imju Fiberwig, also in black

How to wear false eyelashes

Falsies_3
I love my falsies. (No, not those kind of falsies…) No special event would be complete without them, and after the devastation caused by the disappointing YSL Faux Cils Mascara, and my complete failure to identify a suitable replacement, I have a feeling I’m going to be relying on them more often from now on.

The secret to wearing false eyelashes without looking like a drag queen? Don’t make like our friends at Shu Umera (above) and go the whole hog with patterns, feathers and – ohh! why not add some diamante, too? No, the secret is to go with individual false eyelashes. Are they fiddly to apply? Well yes, there’s no getting away from it, they are. Much like pointy-toed stilettos, though, you get used to them, and pretty soon? You’ll be wondering how you ever managed without them. Here’s how to wear ‘em…
