Dollface Reviews: Skin Doctors Instant Eyelift Eye Lifting Serum

skin doctors instant eyelift serum Dollface Reviews: Skin Doctors Instant Eyelift Eye Lifting Serum

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time at all, you’ll probably know that I have a bit of an obsession with my under-eye area going on at the moment. This means I’m more or less willing to try ANYTHING that claims to make that area look better, so when the lovely people at Fragrance Mad offered to send me something from the Skin Doctors line to review, Instant Eyelift was my product of choice.

In retrospect, this probably wasn’t my wisest move ever, and, in fact, using this product has allowed me to realise that what I have under my eyes isn’t actually “bags”. Nope, they’re just very dark shadows. Sure, they may look a bit like bags, but it is but an illusion caused by the dark stripes that run underneath the eye sockets (or at least, they do when I’m not using something that gets rid of them – more on that subject next week), but they’re not, so an eye lift isn’t exactly what I need, as tempting as it sounds.

This is a shame, really, because if your eyes ARE in need of a lift, this product may well be of interest to you. This is a clear serum which comes in a pump-action dispenser, and is applied under the eyes to lift and smooth them. It’s an instant effect, but not a permanent one, so while it’s claimed that this will make your under-eye area look better within a few minutes of application, it won’t stay that way. In fact, it’ll last for about eight hours, before returning, Cinderella-like, to normal.

I’ve tried this a few times now, following the instructions on the box, which tell me to shake the bottle thoroughly and then apply a few drops of serum under each eye. Importantly, you’re not supposed to use your facial muscles any more than necessary while it’s drying, which will tale 2-3 minutes. What’s actually happening here, you see, is that the serum is forming a “film” over your skin, which will tighten it and hold it in place, creating the illusion of smooth, non-baggy eyes. In other words, it effectively “freezes” your skin in place, although the word “freezes” is misleading here, because a) it’s not cold and b) you will still be able to move the skin afterwards – it’s not going actually immobilise anything. The reason they tell you not to blink your eyes too much, or screw up your face, say, while it’s drying is that if you do that, it’ll just seal the expression lines you’ve just made in place instead, and no one wants that, do they?

Naturally, as soon as I knew I wasn’t supposed to move my face while I this serum was drying, that was ALL I could think about doing. I kept getting an almost-irresistible urge to screw my face up into the most grotesque shape possible, just to see what would happen. Well, you would, wouldn’t you? Thankfully, I managed to restrain myself, and sat out the three minutes with my face as expressionless as an ACTUAL doll face.  As I waited, I could feel the serum starting to take effect. It’s a curious kind of sensation, and a little bit like the feeling of a clay face mask drying on your skin: you can feel the skin tightening as it dries.

Once it was done, I looked in the mirror, expecting to see someone several years younger staring back at me. Nope, it was just me. In fact, I didn’t really see much of a difference at all, although I have to point out that this is probably because I don’t really have “eye bags” as such. From the tightening I could feel going on, I have a feeling this would have a much more obvious effect on someone who DID have pronounced lines or sagging under the eyes, although I’m curious as to what would happen at the end of the eight hours: does your face just suddenly dramatically collapse, I wonder, causing you to age instantly in front of whomever you happen to be talking to at the time? That would be… well, kinda cool, actually, as long as it wasn’t ME doing the ageing. I do enough of that already, thanks.

I was a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to wear makeup on top of this, as it basically creates a “film” on the skin. To my relief, though, my makeup went on as normal, so I was able to apply my usual trowel-load of foundation and under-eye concealer. (I still looked like a raccoon today, though. I seriously need to get more sleep.)

Here’s a before-and-after shot from the Skin Doctors site, to give you an idea of what this SHOULD do, and I just want to stress that this is NOT ME:

Pretty dramatic, huh? And this reinforces exactly why I’m still in the wrong age group to be able to really tell you whether this works or not: my eyes don’t quite look like the “before” shot yet, although just give me a few more months and I’m pretty sure I’ll get there.

If you’re there already, however, and you want to try this out, it’s currently £9.99 at Fragrance Mad: click here to order it.

Dollface Reviews: Nivea Visage Aqua Sensation Anti-Shadow Eye Cream

nivea anti shadow eye cream Dollface Reviews: Nivea Visage Aqua Sensation Anti Shadow Eye Cream

Well, Dollfaces, you can colour me amazed.

As many of you know, I’ve been complaining about the dark shadows under my eyes for a loooong time now, and I have to admit, I’d actually reached the point where I was about to give up on them. Absolutely nothing worked: creams, concealers, highlighters, lifestyle changes - no matter what I did, I still looked a lot like a raccoon, and, short of booking myself in for expensive surgery, I’d started to feel that I’d just have to learn to live with the Shadows of Mordor, as I’d come to think of them.

Obviously I wasn’t exactly thrilled about this. I actually think dark shadows are more ageing than wrinkles, and I was permanently walking around looking like I hadn’t slept in weeks. I was tired of shelling out for products that didn’t make much of a difference, though, so when my current eye cream ran out and I started scanning the Boots website for a replacement, I was guided mostly by price.

That’s the main reason I decided to take a chance on Nivea Visage’s Aqua Sensation Anti-Shadow Eye Cream. At £5.99, it’s definitely one of the least expensive eye creams out there, and while I’d learned not to trust the claims of shadow-blasting creams, I figured it couldn’t hurt that this one promises to “effectively reduce puffiness and the appearance of under eye shadows “. So I bought it, and started using it as soon as it arrived.

As far as the appearance and texture of the product go, there’s nothing much to write home about. It comes in a 15ml glass pot, and is a white cream of medium consistency, with a very faint fragrance. It contains cucumber to refresh and de-puff the eye area, vitamin E to nourish and protect, plus magnesium, ginseng and light-reflecting pigments to get rid of those blasted shadows. I had absolutely no expectations at all about this product: I thought that, at best, it would probably be a reasonably good under-eye moisturiser, so you can only imagine my surprise just a few days later when I looked into the mirror one morning and noticed that my eyes were looking better than usual. Quite a bit better, actually.

Now, I’m not going to tell you the dark circles have disappeared altogether, because they haven’t. They are, however, looking significantly better, and are more like the “normal” dark circles people with pale skin tend to get, rather than the “I am actually a vampire and I haven’t slept for fifteen years” look I was previously sporting. I’m using much less under-eye concealer than I used to, and I really notice a difference in the under-eye area. I don’t think there are any other changes that could account for this, so I’m assuming Nivea has done exactly what it promised to do, and trust me, no one is more surprised than I am.

I noticed an improvement after just a few days use: I’ve been using the cream for about two weeks now, and while I can’t say that the shadows get less noticeable every day (they don’t), I’m still very happy with this, especially given the low price.

Is it just a fluke? I really hope not, but if you want to try it for yourself, this is £5.99 from Boots.

Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage

clinique all about eyes Clinique All About Eyes Serum De Puffing Eye Massage Like Clinique, I’m “all about eyes” at the moment, but sadly for me, my obsession with eyes is because in the ongoing battle of Dollface Vs Dark Circles, the dark circles are most definitely winning. More on this next week, when the Secret Weapon I’ve ordered to vanquish my foes (hopefully) arrives, but for now, here’s Clinique with a secret weapon of their own: their new All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage rollerball.

As the name suggests, this is primarily designed to de-puff the eye area, but it also claims to help with the dreaded dark circles. It’s a cooling, refreshing fluid which will soothe tired eyes, and the rollerball pen will also deliver a gentle massage.

Lately I swear I can actually FEEL the dark circles gathering under my eyes, a bit like stormclouds on the horizon. I’m possibly imagining this, but towards the end of the day it’s like I can feel the skin around my eyes thinking to itself, “Right, that’s it, I’ve had enough of staring at this screen all day, I’m going to start looking like ass, and I’m going to do it RIGHT NOW.” In fact, I can feel it happening as I write this. This product, then, sounds mighty good to me right about now. Anyone tried it? If you haven’t, but you want to, it’s $25.50 (if it works, I’d pay double that. I’m not joking.) at Sephora.

Dollface Reviews: Bobbi Brown creamy concealer kit and under-eye corrector

bobbi brown creamy conceale Dollface Reviews: Bobbi Brown creamy concealer kit and under eye correctorI mentioned a while back that I’d made only two beauty purchases during my December holiday, and it’s a good job I DID only buy two things, because although these two items are small, they’re not exactly cheap, and by “not exactly” I mean “not at all, really.”

In fact, let’s just get the bad news out of the way first: the Corrector (right) is £16.50. The Creamy Concealer Kit is £23. Just under £40 for the two, then, but it was a price I was willing to pay because these two items promised to cover up my under-eye shadows, and by that point I’d probably have sold one of my limbs for that.

The dark shadows under my eyes are currently the absolute bane of my life. They’re caused purely by lack of sleep: if I get enough of it, they disappear, but when I don’t, it shows all over my face – or under my eyes at least. The two products you see above are designed to send the bags packing (Sorry!), and they’re designed to be used together, although you can, of course, use them separately if you wish (or if your shadows aren’t quite as stubborn as mine).

On the left of the image, then, we have the creamy concealer kit, which is actually two products in one jar. On top, the creamy concealer that gives the product its name; on the bottom, a loose powder which goes over the top to set the makeup. For those with very dark shadows, meanwhile, the product on the right of the image is used as a base, to neutralize the shadows before the concealer goes on top.

So, how well do they work?
